Happy is my sister's sheltie. He is from a BYB at best, a puppymill at worst. He is seven years old.
Last week I was cuddling with him and found two lumps on his belly/chest. My sister took him to the vet Tuesday and they said they were benign fatty tumors, but to watch them. Okay, one thing out of the way.
After I got home from work today I went out in the yard and was scooping poop. Kota's poop looks totally different than Happy's and was in a completely different part of the yard, and I know it wasn't Auggie's because we always go out with him and clean up after him right away. So I found Happy poop. Happy, for one thing, is on Nutro and has runny, soft poop all the time. But I found half of a regular poop which then turned into really really runny poo, and then five piles of small liquidy poop pieces, like he had diarrhea.
Then a few feet away, I found a piece of something. It was a little over a foot long and my first thought was a worm. It looked like a piece of intestine or something, and it was poop-coloured so it almost certainly was pooped out. It was maybe about a quarter of an inch thick, very spongy and soft. I tried to scoop it up because I didn't want the other dogs to get into it, and it was falling apart/oozy/dripping into other pieces. It didn't move on it's own.
I came inside and called the emergency vet, since it was 6:05pm and neither my sister's vet nor my vet were in their office any longer. She said it sounded like possibly an intestinal worm and probably wasn't anything to panic about, but that I should save what I found and either take it to them or take it to our regular vet for a worm test (or whatever it's called) to find out for sure what it is.
She asked me if he was on a monthly worm prevention, and I had to tell her I don't know. My sister claims he is, but I never see her give them any (and she's a habitual liar, even over the stupidest things.) so I can't say for sure he is - but I also can't say for sure that he's NOT. She said it's possible if he did have a worm, and is on a preventative, that he passed it out.
I always worry like you wouldn't believe when something happens to the dogs, especially when it's Happy because I feel like he's this fragile little thing who gets really sick at the drop of a hat. There's been so much wrong with him, I hate to think of anything ELSE happening - and yet things just keep happening. Her vet is open tomorrow so hopefully she will take him like she needs to...
Any ideas? What else might it be? =/
