So this is kind of a follow up from my "Help me cure her itchies!!!" thread. I took Sage to the vet this morning and she has been diagnosed with Atopic Allergies (inhalant allergic reaction) which the vet said is probably seasonal as she's never really had this severe of a reaction before. The vet, which was a very nice lady whom my dog seemed to really warm up to, thought that since we moved to a new town about 350 miles north of LA that it must be something blooming that she hasn't ever been exposed to. Sounds plausible :) This is what she has me doing to treat the issue...

Prednisone-- I was very aprehensive about this drug and I let her know! She acknowledged the harmful effects of the drug if used in high doses or for long periods of time. She assured me that in moderation the drug can be very safe and effective. I just don't like the thought of steroids going into my little baby!! I was instructed to give her 1 pill 2x a day for 5 days, then taper down to 1/2 a pill 2x a for 5 days then 1/2 pill every other day.

Hydroxyzine-- an anti-hystamine that i'm supposed to add in once I'm at the point where I'm giving the prednisone every other day.

My dog is 3yrs and about 9 lbs...what are your thoughts on this diagnosis and treatment? Is it even possible to treat inhalant allergies in a holistic way? One thing that worried me when I was reading about it was...seasonal allergies usually end up being year round as the dog's age!! That would be a nightmare and I really don't want to be pumping her full of meds :(
