Urine Sample??!!

I have to get a urine sample from Verde before going to the vet on thurs. I need tips on getting this sample. Do I sneak up behind her when she squats with a rubber made container?

Any tips?

Taping the container to a broomstick or something.. Some dogs can be pretty incensed.. Cider's fine to shove a margarine container under, but I hear many dogs will go hell no!!

The vet can't express her bladder or draw it out via syringe?

That's how we get all our urine. Asking a client to do it gets us weird looks lol.

The vet asked me to obtain the sample. I didnt know there where other ways to aquire it.

Im sure Ill get quite a WTF look from her when I shove a container under her.

Yah the vet can reach under her (or you could do it, even) near her happy spot and there'll be a sac there, about the size of a baseball when full on a dog her size (it'll be more elongated in shape though) and just squeeze that and pee comes out.

Either that or she could poke the dog with a needle and suck the urine out with a syringe. But I've only seen the vet use this method when we already knew that stones had formed and expressing the bladder would be painful.

You have to get it by thursday? Call her tomorrow and ask. There may be a reason why she's not doing it that way. The dog doesn't have to be sedated or anything but I don't know all the bits and pieces of your dog and vet.

They want a fresh sample, or a refridgerated only a couple of hours old sample for her appointment on thurs.

Where is this "happy spot"?

I...don't know if you're being sarcastic. It's her female spot. Not the one on the back end but below the row of nipples. The same place they cut open when females get a spay.

I know where her scar is so I should be able to find it if shoving a container under her dosent work.

I recently had to get one from Caiza and you would think with a male it would be easy. I waited till he went for a second and then stuck the sterile cup under him and I got the WTF look mom! Needless to say he stopped but I did manage to get a little and the vet said it was all they needed. Good luck....:)

Blue, I take a piece of aluminum foil and make it into the shape of a narrow bowl and walk behind my female. When she squats to pee, I quickly hold it underneath her. This has worked very well for me.

If the vet is close by, you could always bring the sample ahead of time.

Thanks for the tips everybody. Luckly I have a 4.5 hour window tommorow to get said sample.

She squats real low so here is hoping for the best, with the sample and that its a training thing and not UTI.

I spent 45 minutes out there trying to get her to pee, she wont do it. Ill try again shortly before we head to the vets.

Hopefully Erp dosent give me to many problems getting her into her carrier, she is allready pissed.

I"ve used a soup ladle under Lilly. It worked pretty well, although she did look rather insulted. My father was beyond horrified when he saw what I had used however.

I got a sample at the vets, shoving the container under her didn t even phaze her. She is all healthy and possibly an exitable peer.

Erp was not happy the entire time, at least she didnt try and bite me. She did piddle a little in the carrier.

I had to do that with a cat once. What a horror show.
