my dog just got dental cleaning this past tuesday...he was put under anesthesia etc...and he has a patch on his front leg where they shaved it to put the IV needle in...
it's been bothering him since and it's red now and he keeps licking it.
is there anything i can do? is there anything serious about this?

thanks

any speedy responses are greatly appreciated!

It's probably just irritated from being shaved. My dog just had to have an IV put in too and he has that area shaved. He hasn't been real irritated, but you may be able to just put a warm wash cloth on it every so often to make it more comfortable for him, or put some soothing aloe on it.

You need to call the vet and let him know that where they gave him the shot for the anesthesia, may be infected.

could it be anything serious?

any kind of aloe? is there anything that they sell in pet stores that may help?

If its a credible vet, they've used clean needles, etc I kinda doubt its infected.
Is the whole shaved area irritated, or just the spot where the needle is?

It's possible he's got razor burn...
that happened to Missy when she got spayed with the vet who worked with the pound. My vet said Vit E creme (which I used and worked quite well ;)) neosporin or maybe a dab of vasaline (didn't try the second two, but I have used neosporin on dogs several times in the past)
;)

the whole area is irritated, it's red.
last time, it also got irritated but it started peeling and pussing but it's just red this time...i'm guessing it's a combination of irritaiton from the shaving/needle and also from the hair growing back in.
any other suggestions?
thanks :)
we definitely used a credible vet (pender vet in fairfax, va) it's a huge animal hospital with all kinds of facilities and i'm positive they are excellent.

could i use something that is for human use? (especially if it's all natural?) like some kind of aloe vera/hydrocortisone thing for humans ( i found one on pestmart for pets, but if the human one is made of the same stuff can that be used?)

thanks

At this point I'd put on an antibiotic powder ... cover it with a light wrap and then tape on a sock over it .

I'd go with aloe or vitamin e for the night and then call the vet in the morning. If you take vit e capsules you can break them open and put them on.

This is what I would do since it doesn't sounds as serious as I thought it was in my first post.

I would also wrap some gauze around the shaved area after you put some vit. e or neosporin.

The redness is most likely just caused from the razor burn and licking. A surgical shave (down to the skin) is what clinics use and it can be irritating to some dogs and they wills start to lick. For now, the key is to prevent the licking and the redness should go away. I would recommend applying apple cider vinegar and letting it dry. It will soothe the irritation and dogs hate the smell and won't lick.

thanks everyone for replying. his hair has almost grown back and the redness is mostly gone, except for one spot. the warm cloth really helped!
