My friend has a GSP that seems to have developed a behavioral problem only when she is around him. I told her that I would post this in the forum to see if anyone has any ideas on the issue. Her dog is around 2 years and he is neutered. When she comes home from work and she lets him in the house, he starts spinning in circles out of control and chewing and suckling the spot where he fractured his hip a while back (healed now.) This behavior is very frantic and he wont stop doing it as long as she is around him. When she leaves him with a friend for the day he NEVER does it!! He has been to the vet and the vet just wants to keep him tranquilized (expensive and unhealthy!) He also tries to sleep on top of her at night. Anal glands are not the issue. Any ideas

Sounds almost like obsessive compulsive disorder, except that he doesn't do it except around her. Does she give him all kinds of attention when he's doing it? Tell her to try for a couple of weeks or a month... absolutely ignoring that behavior, not looking at him, not speaking, nothing. When he stops, even for a minute, she should then pay lots of attention and give him treats. She needs to show a real contrast. That is...if she's sure it's not medical in a physical way. If she does this religiously and he still continues, it may be that the drugs the vet is suggesting are beta blockers which often help with OCD. There may be another kind of drug she could look into which doesn't have quite that tranquilizing effect, but still an anti anxiety type thing. I don't know what else to say.
