Hi! I have lurked here for quite a while, but only posted a few times. We recently acquired a 5 month old papillon puppy. He was a pet store puppy (I know, I know...) that was getting ready to be shipped to a kill shelter due to his age. They wanted to make room for their new puppy mill mutts, so I felt horrible for the little guy. I am a sucker, so I took him home.
So far, he has been relatively good. Very few accidents (due to husbands short attention span), and has learned basic obedience commands. We have had him since last Thursday. He doesn't LOVE his crate, but is pretty tolerant of it as long as either we, or our poodles are in the room. He seems pretty healthy, EXCEPT last night he started hacking then gagging, but not producing any phlegm. He did this pretty frequently through the night, but it subsided this morning. There were no signs of it until this evening about an hour ago, and he started up again. He is eating, drinking and playing like normal. He really only starts coughing when we put him in his crate. There are no blankets or toys in there for the moment, so I don't think he has anything caught in his throat.
It sounds like kennel cough to me, but I have never actually seen a case of it. He doesn't really seem sick, but his gagging is a little bothersome. What do you guys think?
