I just ran into my neighbour and he said he's having his collie pts sleep tomorrow. :( She's a nice dog but a bit timid. She got hit by a porcupine yesterday and since he hasn't had any luck rehoming her he's just having her pts instead of getting her fixed up. I'd love to help her but I just can't take on any more dogs. She's a pretty little thing. Rough collie. BYB I'm sure. Young. Loves to play of course.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can keep her alive?

Local rescues?

is there a rescue around your parts??

the poor pup.. did it recieve medical attention for the quills?

We had a dog come into work that had a fight with a porcupine.. omg there were soo many quills that got pulled out..

I hope the owner didn't pull them out himself.. they are hooked at the end.

Some of them are hooked! I just watched my vet pull 50 or so out of sakari.

There is one local rescue. I've left a message but I know they are always booked up :( I'll keep trying them.

I just left another message with the rescue. I don't know if I can reach them. Steve doesn't think the owner is serious. A few weeks ago he was saying he was going to shoot his dog. He's an old drunk. Steve's going to ask around and see if he can find a home. Even if the guy changes his mind again I think I'll just steal her

I found a rescue!!! These guys called AND emailed and are really, really helpful. http://www.collierescuenetwork.com/ I have to send steve over tonight to find out if they are willing to give her up to a rescue and what vet they are taking her to. They will talk to the vet and have him give her up to the vet. Then they will pay to have her quills taken out and any other care she needs and she gets flown to Ontario where there are apparnetly tons of collie rescues. I hope she gets to go. Even if this old drunk is just shooting off his mouth she'd be way happier with a different family!

Thanks! I'm very excited. And really impressed since it seems to take most rescues a long time to get back to people!

Way to go Saje! Great news. Some dogs just seem to get into porcupines repeatedly. My Lab did and so did her buddy, the neighbor's dog. I've pulled the quils out multiple times from every imaginable place on her body. They're barbed at the end, but it's soft and quite flexible. I used pliers and pulled very gently, slowly, steadily and straight out. The whole thing would come out. Those darn dogs....they never "learn." It's all about, 'I'm gonna get you this time for sure!" LOL. Anyhow....good for you for helping out! It sounds like she could do with a happier home life with someone who wants her.

Not well. She's gone. :( He left first thing this morning and we didn't catch him before he left. I called the clinic but she'd already been pts. Makes me sick. I had a rescue all lined up for her. I'm disappointed in that clinic again. They told me they don't put animals to sleep without good reason but I guess that isn't the case. They could have at least made some phone calls and bought her some time. I can't believe she's gone. What a waste. :(

Oh, Saje, I'm so sorry. :( It says a lot about you how hard you tried to help.
Poor girl. :(

Thanks. :( I'm still pretty sulky about it. Everyone I've told is just furious with him. It's such a waste. Really. I'm thinking NOW that I should have called the vet in the night and left a message on their machine. Maybe it would have slowed things down enough. <sigh>

Next time!

I'm so sorry Saje! :( That's terribly sad. You did your best, and that's all you can do. If only more people were like you.

Thanks. I think Mav is wondering where his friend is. They used to escape and play with each other all day. :(
