Eye goopies

I know there are products I can buy to clean up the "goopies" underneath my dogs eyes, but does anyone know of any "home remedies" for this? Just plain old water on a soft cloth or cotton ball doesn't seem to be taking it off and his face is getting a little stained. I'm not sure what to try and want to be careful what I use around his eyes. Barring that, do the products I can buy in the pet store generally work pretty well?

Hmmmm. . . well, our Filas are supposed to be prone to that too, but Bimmer's always been good about making them sit still while he washes their faces, and now they've all learned to wash each other! (g)

Maybe a mild solution of baby shampoo on a gauze pad?
