View Full Version : I love my neighbors, but..

My neighbors' dog was successfully bred a few months ago, and she's had her puppies. She's a Cairn--and very beautiful, I prefer her over most I've seen in the ring--whose conformation and temperament are severely lacking. She's several inches oversized, has several major faults (long ears, feet curving out, long muzzle and low-set tail) as well as a list a mile long of mild ones, and that's just from my inexperienced eyes. She's crazily food-aggressive and toy aggressive, she will draw blood if you get too close. My knee bears witness to that fact, even though it was another dog getting too close and apparently I was in the way.

But that's not what I'm worried about.. They already have a few prospective buyers for the puppies, two have put down deposits, but.. Unsuitable homes!!!!!!!!! One of the families wanted a GSD, and is settling, and has seven kids-- several of which are under 8. I'm not going to go on, but the homes really are unsuitable, people are picking which puppies they want based on coloring and not temperament, and as far as I know none of them really know anything about Cairns.

Ugh. I love my neighbors.. but these puppies. They deserve so much better. They're probably not going to have good lives, from what I can see now. It's depressing me.

I've talked about it with my neighbors, since before their bitch was being bred. (Oh, did I mention--she turned two in December, and they've been trying to breed her since last summer? As far as I know, no health tests as well. No idea about the daddy, he was picked as a stud for his coloring.) But I'm really not being listened to. Any suggestions? :( Or.. anything random you want to say, really. I'm just very bummed, I thought they'd have better prospects than this.

does your neighbor plan to take pups back if homes don't work out? Sounds like the potential exists! I would ask her that!

Pshhht, potential? I'm positive at least one will be rehomed or euthanized in the next year, if nothing changes. And I've asked them that before, even discussed whether or not they're into breed rescue, etc, and haven't gotten a straight answer. So, I'm assuming not. In that case, I'll probably end up talking with the people and trying to help.

It shouldn't suprise you that they are not more selective about the sale of these puppies. This sounds like it was done strictly to make money. They bred a poor quality Cairn, (oversized with major faults, as you stated) who has behavioral problems and has bitten you, drawing blood. They were trying to breed her at a year and a half of age, no appropriate health testing. From your description of them, these puppies are going to go to the first person who opens their check book and I would expect no less. Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do. This is done all of the time. Hopefully, you will be able to encourage them to spay this girl before they breed her on her next heat cycle. That would be the most responsible thing they could do.

I thought I added that info... yes, the ONLY reason for the breeding is for money. :( Also, she already has her appointment to be spayed, it'll be in June, so no more puppies! :D And yeah, Otch, you're right. I shouldn't be surprised, but I can't help it. They're really nice people and do the right things by their dogs, I just figured that would carry over into finding homes for their pups, regardless of the motivations for breeding. *sigh*

I would ask what the neighbor plans to do when all the puppies end up with those aggressive tendencies and the new owners decide to sue her for selling them lemons. (I don't know if that could actually happen, but they're always free to try it.)

Probably swear they didn't know.

I went over there today, and asked them about when the pups are going to new homes... and they were trying to give one to her new home at SEVEN WEEKS! YES! SEVEN WEEKS! No lie!!! The excuse was "They already paid for her, they want her." :yikes:

I did convince them out of it, so the pups will be going at 8 weeks at the earliest. Apparently all the zillions of prospective homes they'd mentioned to me fell through. Not that I didn't expect that, and I warned them that would happen months ago. So, now that the pups are six weeks-ish, they've got no homes and don't know what they're loking for in prospective puppy-buyers; don't plan on taking the puppies back when their homes fall through--they expect the owners of the father to do that.

Those poor, beautiful puppies. :( I'm just going to do my best to not think about this.

There's not much you can do . You've tried to educate with no results . Just hope they find good homes through pet finder and don't go to the HS . The sire's owner doesn't give a hoot or they wouldn't have bred . They got a stud fee , so bye-bye ! Maybe you can help out by helping to socialize them ...this at least would give them more of a fighting chance !
