Holly was suppose to go in today to get spayed BUT unfortunetely it had to be cancelled agian. She got into her bag of kibble last night and the vet said we needed to reschedule her surgery because she can't eat before she goes in.

My question is if she happens to go into heat within these two weeks until she can get in agian is Elwood old enough to be able to mate with her? He is almost 12 weeks old. The soonest they could get her in is 2 weeks from now so we just have to wait, I hope she won't go into heat but with our luck she will. I was just wondering, I will watch him anyways but just wanted to know if anyone knew for sure.

Holly has not been in heat yet and she is 10 months old.

Who is Elwood  Why am I always so lost, LOL!?

Chances are, Holly will not go into season in the next two weeks. Most large and giant breeds don't have their first season until after a year. With some massive giants, it's close to two years. Usually male dogs are capable of breeding at around 6 months. That doesn't mean they'll get the job done, but they are capable by then...

Elwood's my easter present. Yeah I'm still lost about it too. He's a golden retriever he found from his ex-girlfriend. We got him the day before easter though. Mark felt bad because I was missing Ele even though I told him I didn't want another dog ever agian he didn't listen.

Here's the only picture that I could get to work on photobucket that I have of him, well the link to the picture: http://www.chazhound.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50876

I found the thread. Congrats, he's very sweet. ;) Puppies are a lot of work, but so much fun...

Anyway, the answer is no. He isn't mature enough to breed with Holly.

I know of a Rottweiler litter that was sired by a 16 week old puppy.

I also have a Rottweiler bitch who was in season before 7 mos of age. ;)

Bitches in season should be kept separate from ALL MALES to be safe.

I would keep them seperated but does that just mean keep Holly crated? I hear how resourceful males can be in they find a female in heat. I do have two crates so should I crate them both? Do females show signs before coming into heat? I never really had male dogs before and never had a female who wasn't spayed long before 10 months (we get it done at 6 months) but we had lot of stuff happening and now we are definetely getting it done.

You have a male dog present. You will know if/when she is coming in season, even with just a puppy. Signs are generally obvious. Swelling of the vulva, changes in behavior, blood spotting.

and yes, if she were to come in season, I would crate them both, and in separate rooms with the doors shut if you need to be away.

there is a chance he can get to her. but more than likley he'll be totally confused. but if she does come in. i would definetley seperate them.
