Anyone know of a good Chi breeder in the AL, MS, GA, FL area?

Me brother is going to be getting a dog in the next year. He really likes the long haird chis and I think they would be a perfect match for him and his personality. :) He likes a dog he can play ball with and one that will cuddle (:p) with him while watching TV. Of course he is going to be getting lots and lots of lessons on how to groom, feed, care, ect for a dog from Lizzie and I.

I looked at the National Breed Club, but was not able to find any breeders =/

Russelville AL.

ive never actually met or done buisnes with this breeder however another chi frined of mine has met her dogs and say they are beautiful and there breeding right with limited litters (despite having 4 females and 4 males in their program)
i looked over their site, their dogs are very nice and i do like the fact that they tell you how many points each has under its belt...

again ive never used this breeder myself and am going off the recomendation of another, but might be worth looking into.

http://www.prouxchihuahuas.com/
Panama city beach FL.
these guys come highly recomended by many!
they also provide ALOT of information on the breed on their webpage. ive actually met one of their puppies and he was an absolutly stunning dog with the perfect chi personality!
VERY limited breeding though so contact for waiting list/potential litter info.

those are the only 2 i can think of off the top of my head that ive heard good things about...
good luck in your search, chis are a wonderfull breed, BE WARNED...there adictive...i had 1...now i have 2 and my parents have one lol. and im getting another one in may lol.

Thanks Foxy! :) The first one I am kinda lerry of. They have some OLD dogs...that they are still breeding?

The second one look amazing *drools* But $1000 for a lap dog? Is that kinda steep?

Lizmo, didn't you see my Cav thread where they were charging $1800? :)

Lizmo

Yeah, that's pricey.

But I guess I am used to looking at Working breeders :p

Lizmo

Me too. I am used to seeing about $500 for pups, not $1000+

But I think it's worth it, they seem to put a LOT into there dogs.

I just wanted to say *be careful* purchasing a chihuahua in the FL area. There are A LOT of BYBs and puppymills... I've been told they're 'uber popular' down there :p

FoxyWench

there currently in the midst of a popularity surge so its definatly a breed to be carefull of.

proux chis are gorgeous, well bred and as ive said ive heard nothing but good things about them.
the average price for a well bred chi is currently averaging $800-$1200 here in CT. ive seen "pet quality" chis go for much less but there almost always from BYB's and in this breed it seems to definatly be a get what you paid for kind of thing.

the GOOD points about chis is when from a good breeder, they tend to be a very hardy breed. the only real medical problems there prone to are hypoglycemia, luxation and heart murmers, a good breeder tests for luxationg patellas in their stock, they also test for heart, and in well bred chis, after the age of 6 months the risks of hypoglycemia tend to drop dramatically. after that 6 month mark they tend to be very hard and again spend a little extra for a great breeder who does all the health tests and youll reward yourself with 15+ years of generally just routein checkups and the occasional teeth cleaning.
there a LONG lived breed in general living 15+ yrs, my granfather has a 20 yr old 2.5lb pet female whos never had a health concern in her life.

personally id have no problem paying out $1000 to proux for a good chi because id know im getting a wonderfull puppy.

you could also contact the breeder at proux chis and let them know what your looking for and they could probably point you in the right direction. i havent had much in terms of dealings with breeders down south as im up in CT.

i do agree though, be VERY warey of BYB's and mills due to the currently popularity of the breed.

theres no such thing as a "teacup"
and theres NO rare colours in chihuahuas.

if your looking for a pet puppy rather than a show baby make sure you let them know that, every breeder has "pet quality" pups in a litter and many will go cheaper. or even taking on a slightly older chi, vixie was almost 7 months when i got her.
these guys live so long that adopting an older chi has no effect on quality time.
they also bond VERY strongly to their person.

Zoom! your so right, my mother wants a cav king charles but there UBER expensive theres a breeder up her (good one) charging and getting over $2000 for pet pups and over $3000 for show.

For a longcoated chihuahua, I would definately go with Chihuahuas of Belle Shoals. They have gorgeous dogs :D They are located in NC, though... a bit of a drive, but completely worth it.

Ehhh... I'd refrain from asking them, honestly. The reply you will get will be similar to this:
1. Puppyfind.com
2. Breeders.net
3. Local paper.

I was actually banned from that forum for talking too much about the breed standard (when the deerhead (non standard) vs. applehead discussions arose, and the final straw was when a longtime member purposely bred her 10lb chi to her dachsund chi mix...

jessie, belle shoal have gorgeos dogs, never seen them before. cuties.

chi people is a great place if you just want somewhere you can gush about how cute everyones chis are and for tidbits of occasional chi information. im a member, in generally ok standing, the MANY byb's on the board absolutly HATE me, but the mods know i also provide alot of valuable knowlgedge and references when it comes to certain aspects, i have to bite my tounge ALOT but its the only thing that keeps me on the board. it is a nice place to talk to other chihuahua owners about the quirky things and there are a couple ok-good breeders on the forum but its definatly not someplace id suggest in your search for a breeder.

good luck and as i said (and as you might be able to tell form both mine and jessies siggies, chihuahuas are 100% adictive, you start with one...and before you know it you have a pak of the munchkins running your home.
i have 2, and since i live with my parents, they have 1 so that = 3 and i have another one for ME on the way so ill have 3 chis, my parents have 1 + a cocker.

my dad hates lil dogs...and rosie is HIS lol! there like potatoe chips!

The chihuahuas of belle shoals on their nursery page it has a litter at the bottom where there is a smooth coat puppy and 3 longcoats
so heres my questions

is this a smooth to longhaired breeding?
or a longhaired to longhaired breeding?

~Jessie~
04-09-2007, 04:31 PM
^^^ Yes, it's a smooth to long. In the US, you are allowed to breed smooth x long, whereas in the UK they are looked at as separate breeds :D
