that she was an angel!!! I left her alone for 45 minutes outside her crate and she didn't chew anything or pee on the carpet. She was just sitting in the middle of the room when I came home looking all cute and happy to see me! Such a good girl!
Aww what a good girl! Did you go over the whole house? :D just kidding. I know my dogs would be in the garbage or something!

She's 8 months old. She got a treat, and a walk in the park for being so good.

That is really great, but be careful!
Starting at 4 months, we gave Herschel more and more free roam based on his behavior. If he was good for a week--no potty accidents and no damage, then he was given more room.
He was mostly great about it. However--there were certain days where he would rip carpet, chew walls, and knock plants over. They were rare occasions, but the behaviors are self-rewarding.
He now gets crated while we're gone and has no problem with it. He doesn't cry and he is well rested when we get home. We've thought about giving him free roam again, but as someone once told us, "there is always tomorrow."

I received a call from one of my puppy people a couple of months ago. "How can I teach him that tearing up the carpet is wrong?"
She decided that at 6 months of age he would be okay to leave loose in the house. I told her that he might not be old enough to leave loose when she's gone until he's two YEARS old. LOL. She asked me if there was some way to teach him. I asked her if he did it when she was there. She said no, just when she was gone. Well, no, if he doesn't do it in front of you, you can't correct him for it. She said, "Then the only way to leave him loose now would be to put down ceramic tile?" :D I told her that would work, but then he would just find something else to get into....
She too had started just leaving him when they went on short trips. He found the carpet interesting one day when she left him for 4 hours for work.
There is just so much that a young dog can get into at this age. They will do things that we never even would consider possible. They get bored, they find something to do.

OK. I'm getting ready to get my hair cut and I'm going to try leaving her by herself again. I'll probably be gone just over an hour. I've picked up the remote controls, shoes and anything else on the floor that might look tastey to her. I'm going to shut all the doors to limit her to the living room, dining room and kitchen. Pray for me!

Great job! It feels really good to see your pup grow into a responsible little dog. However, I agree with the others. Don't get carried away. Puppies will have times when they are perfect little pups. But as they grow, their personalities are developing and they will be experiencing things differently from one day to another. I have never had a male be completely trustworthy until well over a year old, closer to two in most cases. Hang in there and don't be too anxious. You don't want to push your pup into a situation that causes her to make mistakes and be unsuccessful. Other than that, I'm happy for the proud mama!

I agree- I don't trust her 100%. This second try she was a good girl again! I was actually gone longer than expected- almost 2 hours! Nothing chewed up, nothing peed on. Yay

I remember when I left my lab alone for the first time. She was about 7 months old. She chewed a corner off of the end table. Boy was my mom maaaaad!:D
