I'd never heard of or seen this type of dog until yesterday. We had Daisy at the vet for a shot, and a guy came in with an Akbash pup. What a beautiful dog! The pup was 14 weeks old and probably weighed 40lbs. It looked like a white Golden Retriever. It's fur was cottony soft, like our Himalayan cat's. He explained the breed to me and why he got one- he raises deer, and needs a guard dog for them. It was very interesting and I wanted to share my experience with everyone.

Wow, I can't believe you met an Akbash. It's funny, because Max, Anatolian Shepherd, is often mistaken for an Akbash. This is Max at 11 weeks old. He's a white, long haired Anatolian:

It is my understanding that the Akbash and Anatolian Shep. and the Kangal are closely related. The think the Akbash is a beautiful dog; the most "showy" of the Turkish breeds.

We had an Akbash. Her name was Zoe.

Looking at these pictures makes me sad. Zoe died of torsion at just under a year of age. She was an incredible dog and taught us a lot about LPD's.

There is an alpaca farm I used to drive by regularly that had an Akbash as the LGD. I loved to look out over the field of white alpacas and pick out the dog on the way by:) .

They are amazing dogs; one of my favourite breeds in that group.

Awww you are so lucky! They are great dogs indeed. dont be fooled though, they might look similar to GRs but they have a VERY different personality ;)
