i have a 4 month old golden retriever. She knows how to "wait" when I give her a treat, but she never knows the word "take it". Is there any way to train her so that she can understand it?

We've taught the word, "free."
When I put there food bowls down, all are sitting nicely, looking at me eagerly. I say the word, "free" and they're on it! lol
The same is for any leave it command. OR when they are on a sit stay or down stay. The word "free" means much to them.
How have you taught, "wait"?

Does she respond to any other cue like an "OK" or a nod? If she is responsive to an existing cue, you could just add in the "Take it" to the existing cue, then eventually drop the old cue until you are just saying "Take it".

I actually never allow a dog to finish the "leave it" with a "take it" without me physically handing it to them, at least during puppyhood. TAKE IT should not mean grab it from the ground, it should come from your hand or not at all (using a replacement reward in the latter case).
So if I were teaching LEAVE IT, the TAKE IT would be followed by me picking up the object and offering it to them if I actually wanted them to have it.
This is a much safer way to teach a transferable LEAVE IT in the real world with items that you may never want them to get. Of course all of the usual reward fading is done as it is with all other commands.

Start using the words you want, like "Take it." Set up several formal teaching sessions every day for this command. Hand your dog an item and every time, say "Take it." I would do this 4-6 times every session. Be sure to praise. In addition, start saying the phrase every time you feed your dog a treat or even hand her a toy. She should start connecting the activity to the words, "Take it." Good luck!
