Just wondering if anyone knew if mange would clear up for a bit with a bath? The vet noticed wiggles had thinner hair around his eyes, mouth, etc but no sore-ness or anything. He has a lot of dandruff also. We have been giving him fish oil and his coat has gotten shiner, but still itches. I ended up giving him a bath (Got a *TON* of hair out) and he was not nearly as itchy, but now he's back up on dandruff and itchies.... It mostly itches on his rear end. And yup, Calling the vet tommorow just wanted to see if anyone knew.

i would say no, unless its an ivermectin dip or something like that.
i am actually vetting Ruckus tommorow for hair loss around most of his eye. its just getting worse and worse.

what breed do you have?

either way, an oatmeal bath might help with that dandruff and itchyness

If your dog has mange.....no a regular bath would not help.

What food do you feed? Maybe an allergy?

If the vet noticed hair loss, what did he/she do? There are tests to determine if it is mange.

He is eating Evo RM. I tried giving him raw also, But he would get very loose stools. He is a Pit bull mix we think (Stray)

The doctor checked him all over, not seeing any scabs or anything we were guessing it was nutritional related.

I didn't think it was mange as we have 2 other dogs and cats and after over a month, They would be itching too. Maybe he just has some severe allergies going on.

Did the vet do a skin scraping? Because no, one bath would not cut it.

Scrapings and diagnosis are the only way to go . Really your best bet is a specialist .....whether a parasite or an allergy .Cheaper in the long run because you know what you're treating .

Sarcoptic mange is contagious, demodex is not. It would depend on what type of mange it is in order for your other pets to come down with it. Hair loss is usually caused by allergy or demodex. I would request a skin scraping from your vet to be sure...

Why not try him on the poultry based Innova EVO and see if that helps. A lot of dogs have allergies to beef...

First off, are we talking about demodectic mange (aka demodex, red mange) or sarcoptic mange (aka scabies)?

For either one, a regular batch isn't going to cure it. In fact, demodex can never be "cured" although scabies can.

We do mitaban baths which clear up mange really well. Sometimes it doesn't work but often by the second bath you can notice a great deal of clearing up.

But to my knowledge you can't buy the mitaban formula without having a license. So no a regular bath won't do anything.

I'd get a skin scraping if you're really worried about it. If it's sarcoptic mange the dog can just get the treatment and be fine.

Demodex is a bit different though because staph infections are often a problem in this case so you'll get an antiobiotic as well.

Well we did the vet too, She checked him over, skin etc. Also used basicly a blacklight to make sure it wasn't some funky type of ringworm or anything but she is thinking that it is *PROBABLY* just him shedding out his old coat and getting in a new hopefully better one. She wants me to try some missing link in his food also to help with the dry skin.

So freak out over... He's just wanting to be a Mexican wiggly hairless...

That was the cheapest vet visit in awhile atleast though :-/

Do you supplement with a salmon oil?

When you bathe, what kind of shampoo do you use? I suggest an oatmeal and aloe one (for now), I use earthbath (http://www.earthbath.com/) for my crew.

Ha those black lights are awesome. Watching a dog glow green, while sad that they have that many ring worms, is still neat.

Any how that test has roughtly a 60% success rate at exposing a ring worm. It's a cheap, somewhat reliable test. Not to say that your dog might have one but I wouldn't disregard it totally just yet.

Good luck with finding whatever's causing it. Hopefully she's right and it's just shedding.
