My BAD BAD husband left a huge piece of chicken (breast and thigh) on the table and when he came back saw that Zoe ate it ALL! She seems ok, but I'm so worried! Should I take her into the pet hospital?

Feed her some soft stuff . . . bread, maybe some mashed potatoes with some grease to help lube stuff through. Keep an eye on Zoe and watch for any blood in her urine or stool or if she seems to be having any pain. If you see any of those things, then you call the vet.

oh dear. I hope nothing happens! Sometimes bones can pass without causing problems. Like the dogs on raw diets, they are fed raw bones and they usually eat the entire bone. However cooked bones are troublesome and I understand your worry..

Just to add on to Renee's, she gave some good advice... Look for lethargy too. Anything out of the ordinary go to the vet ASAP.

I have fed my dog raw chickens, cooked chickens, rabbits, deer, pork, elk, turkey and fish, all with bones since he was a puppy. He eats very large bones often. He has never had any problems. Im not saying this to stop you from observing your pet or alter your pets diet. I am just saying that its pretty natural grub for a dog and you likely have nothing to worry about.

Thanks Buckshot- I feel better. I'm just a worry wart. She seems fine right now. I'll keep an eye on her....and her, um, eliminations.

Ilsa did this once... I stupidly made her throw up, but she had no ill effects. I agree with Renee, feed some soft food to give her tummy and GI tract some "padding", as well as something high in fiber to "move things along".

Above all though... CALL YOUR VET ASAP!

Buckshot's right . . . Keep your eyes open, but everything will most likely "pass" without any problems. Canine stomach acids are amazingly corrosive  ;)

Agree ! ^^^^ Back in the 60s I'm sure my goldens had their share of chicken bones .... not that we fed , but we lived in the country and who knows whose trash they got into ! ( Not proud of that today folks ! ) All should be OK.

Well she just did a number 2, and there was no blood, and it was all soft. But she just ate the chicken less than 2 hours ago, so I'll keep watching her. I fed her a few teaspoons of gravy and had her drink some water. Thanks all so much for your input.

bulking agents will really help things along. Frozen french green beans, steamed. ( most dogs like them with some plain yoghurt, or maybe some canned mackerel over them).

PLAIN, (not the pie filling) pumpkin. Most dogs like this just fine all to itself.

An herb you can get from your health food store that helps gastrointestinal health is Slippery Elm. I keep some all the time, great for dogs, they like the taste, and you cannot overdose it too. Good for you as well if you are feeling puny or have diarrhea or nausea.

Most dogs will deal with a few bones like this just fine. Symptoms to note that may be cause for concern:

Excessive thirst
Lack of appetite
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Lethargy

It should all be passed within 24 hours.

if it was cooked there is a worry. sophie once ate an entire cooked chicken. we had it on the bench, mum turned around to get the salad, turned back around and there was sophie swallowing hard.

follow their advice to lube her up and keep an eye on her. but i would say all should be fine.

Thankfully, it wasn't an entire chicken! It was a large breast piece with either a wing or thigh on it (I wasn't home at the time so I didn't see it). I don't know if she chewed the bones up or not. It's 9am here and so far she seems fine. She did a poo this morning and it was firm and normal. Then she played with her lab friend out in the field for 40 minutes- no lack of energy. I'll keep watching her throughout the day.

Well I just took her for another quick walk. She threw up all her breakfast. Maybe that's a good thing to clear her stomach. I think I will call the vet.

Well I'm taking her into the vet. Better safe than sorry even though I'm sure the X rays are going to cost a bundle. I am so angry at my husband. How could he do something so stupid??!

OK- back from the vet. They didn't take X rays. She said if her poo is fine, no blood, and no blood in puke she's probably ok. It's been almost 24 hours now. Whew!!

Aren't you relieved? She probably just threw up from running and playing so hard - maybe even ate some grass while she was outside playing. :)

I wouldn't want to be Scooter's hubby though.. He's definitely in for it when he gets home! :yikes:

Yes I am so relieved! I would be completely devastated if anything happened to my girl. My hubby feels bad enough- I don't need to say anymore. He knows how worried I was. And he is going to be much more careful in the future!
