Bernie's owners turned him in because he got 'too big'.
Idiots.
I had the pleasure of meeting him. He is fabulous! But, he cannot be placed in a home with other dogs. If you know anyone in the hampton roads, virginia area who might be interested, let them know about him. I hate to see this big lug in that small cage for so long. :(

They could have at least tried to lie and said someone was allergic to him. Got too big? Now THAT is just a pathetic excuse.
He is a cutie!

Sis, I really think these people may have been brain dead when they thought that was legitimate. Have they seriously not seen Beethoven? Or an adult Saint Bernard? Or even Cujo?
Possibly the dumbest excuse I think I've heard to date. And he is two years old...he was big a year ago, and a year and a half ago, too.

It is one of the most common excuses for Saints ending up in shelters and rescues, pretty pathetic huh? It was the excuse that landed my boy in a rescue, and we were his 3, yes I said 3 home by 10 months of age. I hear it all of the time when we are out walking, 'Well he can't be a pure Saint because he's too big.' Huh????? Hutch is a big male, but not by leaps and bounds.
I hope that boy finds a great home, have any Saint Bernard rescues been contacted?

I'm not sure if any SB rescues have been asked. I'll ask the volunteers, or send an e-mail if I can't get over there this weekend.
I go to this shelter a lot, and I just can't stand that some of these dogs have been in there for so long. They really thought Bernie would go fast, but the only people who have tried to get him already had dogs, and one guy even wanted him to live outside!!! :yikes:

A Saint Bernard got too big, eh? How do these people get through life with no brains? Wonder what they'll do with Granny when she gets incontinent?
Jeez, he just looks like such a lovely guy too.

We get in Saint mixes, newfie mixes and great pyrenees mixes at rescue all the time because they "got too big". People are stupid. Is he DA? Are you sure he doesn't at least like females? Maybe you should try to contact a Saint Bernard Rescue. If he has a high level of DA, a rescue might be best equipped to deal with him.

All of my life I have wanted a saint bernard. I hate people like that. I don't have one because I am still renting. alot of landlords have a problem with dogs of that size. I can't believe there are people that could not know how big they get with all of the movies and such. He's adorable, I wish I could take him home.

I just checked and these are 2 Saint rescues in the area the dog is in

I agree that he would do best at a rescue, they may even have families on a list that are waiting for a compatible dog for their lifestyle. It is not uncommon for males to be same sex DA, and a Saint rescue would be familiar with this problem. I really hope that the poor fella gets out of the shelter and at least into a foster home. Saints are a very sensitive breed to stress and they thrive when they are part of a family. I wish that I was closer, or even in the same country to help him out.
It isn't uncommon for a Saint to sit in a shelter for awhile. Most families aren't willing to sacrifice the space, but even more so the cleanliness!! Saints are not for the clean freaks in the world, they shed, DROOL, take up space, DROOL, big vet bills, drool, shed and I'm not sure if I mentioned that they drool. Seeing a Saint on TV is not like seeing one in real life, imagine standing next to a 175+ lb male, that's the size of some full grown men. Beethoven did what most dog movies do to a breed, make the BYB's see money signs flash before their eyes and the result is this poor fella sitting in a shelter because of no fault of his own.

yea droll is a big issue. You end up having drool rags all over your house. And drool marks on your ceilings and walls. :yikes:

This shelter views dominance as aggression, so, they will not adopt him out to any home with a dog. They are pretty thorough with their checks, just because of problems in the past, which seems fine to me.
I agree, a breed rescue could get him adopted faster I think. I haven't e-mailed or talked to them yet, but I'll be sure to. I was looking at a Pit Bull a few days ago who just came in, but the lady I talked to on another forum went to look at him, and informed me they had put him to sleep because of dog aggression and food aggression. :(

aww! Well, I wonder how "small" the owners thought he would get! Poor guy. :( Saint Bernard=huge! Love the faces though. :)
