When we went today for her rabies shot, he listened again and said that it clearly sounded like a murmur :( and she looked a little thin...

I dont know the grade or anything like that, but here in the next few weeks she is going to be going for some X-ray's and a ECG and a complete workup (not sure what that includes) but I will find out...

I'm so worried :(

Oh Jess...:( I can't wait to hear her results in a few weeks. I'm sure it'll be hard for you to wait that long though. Try not to worry...I know that won't be easy but I'm sure they'll tell you that it's low grade and won't change anything about her life. (((((((hugs))))))) Kisses to Chloe.

My thoughts are with you. Try not to worry too much. My aunt has had a heart murmur since she was a little girl and she's 83 now and just fine. So, you never know. It may not be as bad as you imagine. Your dog is in good hands, that he is getting all the tests. (((hugs)))

Jess please take it one day at a time. If you find out that she needs meds please know that they are not that bad. My beloved Butchie was in congestive heart failure at 7 years old. That is more serious then a mummer. He was loosing weight and his lungs were filling with fluid. I was given a choice to try to treat with meds or PTS. I chose meds. He lived a very good life and died at the age of 13. He was active and alert and played like he was well. Sure some days he did not have energy but overall he lived a very good life. They may find they are able to treat with medication or do some repair surgery. They may find it is so minor that nothing needs to be done at all until she ages. Just take it one day at a time. Don't get to stressed just yet. I wish you and Chloe did not have to go through this. I feel so bad for you and know what you are feeling I have been there. Chloe is very young and that is in her favor. Hang in there Jess I know it's so hard when it involves one we love so much. Keep us posted because we are all going to worry with you. Big HUGS to you and Chloe.

Thanks again :) I'm trying to take it one day at a time and trying my best not to worry but its hard and I know her being young is in her favor but that's kinda what makes it so hard :( if you know what I mean, but with all the people here I know I can at least make it through the next few weeks...and I'm going to definitely keep everyone posted

if you can afford a referral to a cardiologist, i'd ask for one. that's going to be your best bet for an accurate and complete workup and the most effective treatment.

there are lots of options and medications for dogs with heart problems. it's also possible for her to have a murmur that just needs to be monitored but won't significantly affect her life for quite some time.

best of luck to both of you! it's always so scary when there's something wrong with your dog.

Thanks elegy :)

The closest cardiologist to me is in Raleigh NC at NC State (which isn't a problem) the problem would be the $550-$750 that is due AT the time of the service...

The money isnt really the problem its just the fact that it is due at the time of the service...but I can afford the $292.00 for the tests at the vets, but if need be I will come up with it some how and if it is I do need to take her there I will do anything I can to do it...

This is the stuff at my vets that the $292.00 covers
Wellness Care Workup-A (not sure what that is, but will find out)
X-ray (2 films)
ECG Lead II Rhythm Strip
Blood Pressure Diagnostic

EDIT: I just found this on my vets website
Electrocardiography Services: We provide ECG services on-site as well as consultations with cardiology specialists.

I'm so sorry to hear about that, Jess. :( I would totally be freaking out too. Just keep in mind that lots of people live long lives with heart murmurs (and I'm sure dogs do too). I'm keeping you guys in my thoughts. (((((HUGS))))) Keep us updated.

Awww, poor Chloe :( I would try to stay calm and not worry. There are many dogs who live perfectly normal lives with low level heart murmurs.

((((((HUGS))))))

And keep us updated.

Jess, you're taking good care of her. Chloe's young and very strong and you've kept her healthy and active and happy - all things that have a great impact on heart problems. Bet this one turns out to be something incredibly minor - just a blip on the screen.

My little terrier, Benji, has a heart murmur. He gets it from his dachshund side (murmurs are common in dachshunds). Benji runs around and does fine. We've had him for a year so far (2 in August) and haven't had any problems so far, so I think Chloe will be ok! :)

Jack also has a heart murmer Jess. He's been doing really well though in spite of it.
