In December I got my first male dog. I grew up with female dogs, and I never IMAGINED it would be so different to have a male. We've always had labs, and I have never seen this in them before, so I was wondering if it's a "male" thing. My puppy is almost 7 months old, and he is the biggest mama's boy ever. He follows me around the house, snuggles up to me on the couch, and sits at my feet just looking at me when I'm on the computer. My female dogs have always been much more independent and have more or less ruled the house, but my male is just the opposite. He seems to adore me whereas my females couldn't seem to care less at times. I guess I was expecting a more dominant dog this time around, but I couldn't be more happy with his sweet, mellow temperament! Anyone else have this experience with your males?

We have had both in my family..

I have always found the males to be a bit more snuggley, but also a lot more territorial.

BUT since I've met Tims dogs.. his female is a huge lap dog.. she loves climbing up on your lap and being right in your face with that "LOVE ME and ONLY me" look lol

So I guess its to due with how you bring them up as well ;)

I just LOVE male dogs, I have a male lab right now, neutered and 10mo, and he sounds like your dog, he acts tough with other dogs, he stands up for him slef and he when he barks he can actually scare people away, lol:D But he is really a baby, loves to be cuddled and huged and loved, he is always with me and by my side.

I have had mosty male animals and they are always better then the females not to bash my females but the males seem WAY more loveing and follow you around kind of dogs.

My first dog was a Husky mix male and he was SO gentle would NEVER step on anything really aware of other things and people so he wouldnt hert anyone.

Then we got a female Golden and she was are really nice puppy like 8-10wks, but then she just got really independent and eveything was for her, she kind of had an attude.

I also have 2 cats and a hamster and the one cat is a male and just the best cat ever, he is like a dog! The hamster is also a male and so sweet, never has bitten and you can call her in her cage and she will come!! (I know I just said she well, she was supposted to be a she but turned out to be a he, she was sexed wrong as a baby and I have never been able to call her a him since her name is Kelly)

So IM I really feel male animals are bettter then females ;)

I've heard that about some breeds. For instance, many people say of Dobermans, that the females rule and the males drool. LOL. The females are affectionate, but on their terms more. The males are in your face, good 'ole boy slobs. I have a male and he is true to form, very, very mama's boy. My boy Chi is also very velcro and a mamas boy. My girls are sweet and affectionate too and not terribly independent either. But I would say that my boys are just a little over the line from the girls on the super affectionate, mama's babies thing.

My female Lab also was sweet and affectionate but could really do her own thing much of the time. She had more of an independent nature I would say than the females I have now and definitely more so than my boys.

It's very possible too, that it's an individual thing, not just all cut and dry.

Well, you can see it in my avatar. The Doberman is the male and the Chihuahua is the female. She is very much in control of the situation there. LOL.

Funny that you raise this question--I have had female dogs in the past, and one currently. I adopted a male dog last April--and he is definitley a mama's boy--wants to be everywhere I am. This is different from our females--and the female is a lab--wonderful dog, just not as clingy as this guy!

I find that male dogs (of any breed) are generally more "velcro" like, always wanting to be with you. I haven't personally lived with many males, but I do know many others and people say the same as what you're describing you're Lab as. They live to be loved by us, and want nothing more, while females are more independent and often have a "whats in it for me?" attitude. That being said, there are obviously exceptions to this. I personally prefer females to males for some reason.

i've never had a female dog, but all three of the males i've lived with have been the biggest mush ever, especially with women. My uncle, however, had a lab/border collie mix who was a huge mush, constantly in someone's lap. i think it depends on the dog, but females are usually a little more independant, i think.

That is my experience with Males vs Females in all the breeds I have owned (Rotties and Amstaffs).

Athena is more serious and independent and Sal is a serious Velcro dog.

My male Papillon couldn't care less about me, he's on the far end of independent.

At this point I haven't noticed much difference between my male BC and my female, aside from the fact that my girl is much more sensible than my male was at this age.

The only male Labrador I had was an unwound ball of energy. All he wanted to do was run, didn't matter where, just run. And roll around in the dirt. And bark. LOL
Guess I'm not much help, but congrats all the same!

Oh yes, males are a lot more snuggly, but, oh my, I have noticed Hershey is territorial when it comes to something he is not supposed to have, and he thinks its HIS. But, he is a good dog. Hershey is also a Labrador. :) But, I have noticed females, are also loveable, Sugar, was one of those dogs, she just wanted to be loved, played with, and stuff like that.
