I wasn't sure where to post this, but I am curious if this happens in other breeds or is unique to Manchester Terriers....
It seems that many Manchesters tend to be pretty much bald on their throat area and entire underbelly. I'm lurking on some Manchester groups and this seems to be very common and happens mostly for the winter months with a some of the hair coming back during the summer months.
They are an extremely thin coated breed. Right now Zippy has what I would describe as a very very light peach fuzz under his throat and smooth skin on his whole belly. The throat part does not seem to be a collar issue and there is absolutely no scatching or flakiness or apparent irritation involved.
I rotate him between Canidae and Innova food and the coat on his back is super shiny and smooth.
Any thoughts on this? Any other breeds prone to this Winter baldness thing? (that so makes no sense to me LOL!) I was particularly curious about Dobes since they are related...Any feeback appreciated!

My Whippet had odd areas like that - I wonder if it relates to the skin and coat type?

Interesting---apparently at some point Manchesters were crossed with Whippets to increase their speed--that's what gives them the slightly roached back in their breed description---perhaps thats where some of the super fine coat comes into play too---I'm curious about the seasonal aspect to it--just like I wonder why some yellow labs noses turn pink in the winter....

Our shelter had three Itailian Greyhounds, and everyone of them was bald in the places you describe. Our beagle also goes bald on her chest, but I think that is because she is always dragging herself around and wearing the hair off.

There was a Dobe at the shelter a couple months ago with a nice, slick coat on every part of him but the underside of his neck, and his chest/belly. I'm not sure why. He was a red dog, if he had been blue or fawn I'd have suspected CDA.

I have absolutely no idea what it is.

My Dachshund is like that...his vet referred to it the other day as "Dachshund Patterned Baldness".

Yes-- a Manchester list person referred to it as a pattern baldness too--I guess its just a thin coated breed thing...oh well, I'm glad Zippy likes his winter coat when we go for walks! (Oh, and he dries instantly after a bath and any shedding he does is practically invisible---so I guess its not too bad!)
