I was on another forum and there was a person who has a dog who she believes is pregnant. The dog was originally her brother's but he was beating her so she took the pup from him. Now the dogs belly is huge and and her teets are also so she is assuming she will give birth soon and she is only six months old! She has spoken to the vet a couple of times and has a appointment scheduled for Friday. She is afraid she will have the pups before the appointment though. The pup is a husky or husky mix. She needs any advice you can give her, I have never has a dog give birth so I can not be much help to her. She talked to the vet about spaying now but the vet says she is too far along. she will get the mother fixed after the pups are weaned and all the puppies will also be fixed before they go into their new homes. If she can not find homes for all of them then she will keep them. So any advice would be appreciated. The dog has started nesting behavior. The owner is hoping that it is a false pregnancy but is not sure if it is and would like to be prepared if it is not. Thanks!

Have her car ready, have some towels ready, (just in case mom needs help drying her pups, if there are some) umm, have the vet number ready, um, have a comfortable place for whelping. This is all I know. But, there will be more. When more experienced people, that breed their dogs come one, I wish her luck!

I hope for all involved it's a false pregnancy . If real , she should feel the pups moving at this time . Go to the stickies here for more advice .

she held the pup down and felt the puppies moving inside. She is nesting, whining and has stopped eating, I'm thinking within 24 hours she'll have pups, how about you guys?

she has not got back to me yet. How many pups do you think she can expect from a purebred husky puppy? she says that she has done research that shows they have 4-6, but being so young do you think she will have that many. me, I'm praying for two but I doubt she'll have that few.

and also what should she have in the birthing kit (and please tell me what every item is for unless it's really obvious, like a rectal thermometer) oh and what is the normal temp. for a dog and will the temp. drop before she gives birth or does it rise (sorry I know very little about birthing). thanks!

I'm wishing the best for this poor dog and her pups. She's still a puppy herself. :(

Take her to vets' asap. They will see her sooner if you explain current situation. While she may be young, it is very, very unlikely that she's just 6 months of age. That would mean she became pregnant at 16 weeks of age. The vet really should check her out, her current physical condition and her actual age, before Fiday! Good luck!

she has not gotten back to me all day, I'm worried Shorty may have started giving birth, I hope all goes well and she is prepared. If the dog does not get to the vet before she gives birth, they will all go after. She is just going by the age her brother told her, he got her first but was beating her. When the person who has her now got her, she was already pregnant. Thanks for all your help!

Let us know !!! If the pup wasn't checked for worms before breeding .. chances are the pups will have them . I hope she's put the Mom on puppy food and giving extra calcium .

She took Shorty to the vet yesterday and there are 7 pups. One was not moving so he was either dead or sleeping. She found out more info on the dogs age and she is actually 8 months. The vet said she is in false labor which is normal for puppies when they are pregnant so young. I told her about puppy food and calcium (should it be a pill or should she grind egg shells or put bone in). I was also wondering what brand of food to suggest, I know what most of the good foods are but I don't know which ones come in puppy food. I also asked what breed the dogs are mixed with (if she knows) and if anyone is interested in a Husky mix I'm sure she would be willing to talk to you or interview you to see if you are right for one of her pups. I'll keep everyone updated. Thanks for your help!

*sigh* that is a BIG relief! :) Thanks for the update Max!
Hope all goes well!
also, on the food, since she is a large breed, you could just do Innova Large Breed Puppy.

At least she has time to get better prepared ..... You might suggest getting " How To Raise A Puppy You Can Live With " ( Rutherford and Neil ) to her ...a waelth of information . Through Amazon she'll get it cheap and in a couple of days.

here's what she told me today, do you think she's close?
Well, I do believe she's getting close. There's been some clear discharge from her vulva the last few hours. The book I have on hand states that this is just the start of it all. It snowed here today so I took Shorty out for a walk. She loves the snow so much. She ran around in circles, played, lunged and growled at the snow. She tried to eat it as it fell from the sky. Didn't work out so well for her. LOL But, she's adorable and strong. I've been sitting with her for most of the day just in case. My luck, she'll go into labor in the middle of the night and I'll have a suprise or 2 in the morning.
I was worried there for awhile Saturday, though. I couldn't feel the puppies move. I know they have periods of rest and activity. About 5 p.m is when I felt movement and my heart lifted. Even Shorty "looked" worried. She would look at her tummy and whine at it. She's clamed down since they've moved around which is good. You could tell she was starting to stress. Of course she could've been picking up on my stress.

she said the puppies have dropped down in her belly, she must be very close! I'm currently trying to convince her not to paper train (with pee pee pads) the momma puppy (yup she's gonna be a mommy and is not even potty trained herself). I am trying to convince her to crate train. Is it ok to crate train a pregnant dog? also can anyone find me a good article either written by someone on this forum or from somewhere else that explains why crate training is good for house breaking and why paper training is not nearly as effective? I did a search but there are so many articles and I don't feel like sorting through them all (I know I'm lazy :D ). Thanks!

well the mom can't be allowed to whelp in a crate, you'll need some place else for her to whelp. I find housebreaking easier with a crate than papers. With papers they get the mixed signal they can go inside in certain spots. I hope all goes well, still seems young for a dog to be pregnant though so I hope it all goes ok. I know our little collie's mom was only a year old when she had her puppies.

yes I agree. I told the owner to see if the vet would do it but the vet said she was too far along. This person rescued the dog from her abusive owner and she was already pregnant when she got her. I think it is horrible that the poor puppy had to give birth but there was nothing they could do at the point that she got her. The owner does plan on spaying once the pups are weaned.

ok this is what she said today:
We named the first born "Free Willy". LOL The fourth born is ugly as sin. There is no, so ugly he's cute. Hims just ugly. So, we're calling him Big Ugly. The little girl hasn't got a name yet. I'll wait for her personality to show before giving her a name. Right now she's just "baby".
Shorty is still doing very well. I planned to call the vets to get her and them in for a check-up. Thanks for reminding me, Maxy. I'm not sure how well it's going to work as Shorty is highly posessive with the pups. She hardly leaves their side, she covers them with her body/head if you're with her for more then 5 minutes. She doesn't like you to touch them in any way. I'm going to talk all of it over with the vet, though. I just feel with her being a new mommy, she just doesn't know what to expect and is protective.
I had my Uncles girlfriend come out to look at the pups. She said all 3 look just like Husky puppies. The Angel that passed looked like a Cocker Spaniel. Found out she has a Cocker over there that could have mated with Shorty. But the puppies resemble Shortys Dad and her own sibilings when they were pups. So, it's possible that she got pregnant by her Dad. I hope that doesn't cause issues with the pups as they get older. Cathy (the girlfriend) said she could get the pups sold for me without registration papers. I insist on adoption papers, though.
and these are the pics:

The one with the "diamond" white spot is Big Ugly, the next one with the white stripes is the girl, and the all black one is Free Willy.

I'm glad the puppies were born healthy. I hope they don't have issues if it was an inbred litter. A little off topic, Shorty is cute, but she doesn't look like a Siberian Husky to me.

doesn't look pure to me. She looks like a shepard mix of some sort (shepard/husky maybe). We had a purebred Husky and Shorty doesn't look anything like ours did. Puppies are cute though, good luck with them.:)

yeah when I saw her I did not think she was pure either. She's probably not, that's what everyone on the other sight said too.

She doesn't look pure to me either, but she's a cutie and so are her pups. I'm glad everything hasn't been a complete horrible disaster as I was afraid would happen.
Sorry if this was brought up, but do you know what she's going to do with the pups? Put them on Petfinder?

she said she will screen the people who want to adopt them and if nobody wants them then she will keep them.
this is what she said today:
Just a quick update:
Shorty and the pups went in for a check-up. She did amazingly well for the ride in and home. We had to seperate them in order for the vet to look at the pups. "Mom" kept growling at him when he went near them. They are fine and have their "fingers and toes." Shorty got her shot to expel anything that might be left in her uterus. The vet said she looks good "but worn out." LOL And unless something comes up with Shorty, he doesn't need to see them until the pups wean so we can get Shorty spayed and the pups their first shots. I can try and start weaning them about 5 weeks of age. They have to be off Mom for 10 days for her milk to dry before her spay.

Hello everyone. I am Shortys human servent. I want to thank everyone for all the help you have given me through Maxy. I don't know what Shorty or I would have done without the support we have received. Just to clerify, she was already too far along for a spay/abort. That was my first thought when I found out about her pregnancy. I do plan to adopt the puppies out in the future. They'll be going with adoption papers. I'll probably be asking a ton of questions about that when the time comes. If they don't get adopted (I am picky!) I will be keeping them here. Shorty will be spayed in about 6 weeks if I can get the puppies to wean by then. Yea, I'll be asking about weaning when the time comes, too. I admit I am so far out of my element it's unreal. I want to do right by these pups and their mother. Any help, hints, tips and tricks anyone can give me will be appreciated.
Thank you!

Thank you for the welcome! Shorty and the pups are doing great. They are growing so fast! I have that book in my library quay so when it gets in, I'll get it. Thank you for recommending it to me. I'll check out all the sticky threads when I have the time this weekend to sit and read.
I also have new pictures. They are going on 6 days old now.
Willy (the only boy) : http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...s/HPIM2375.jpg
Porkchop: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...s/HPIM2377.jpg
And I haven't named this little girl yet: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...s/HPIM2376.jpg
Willy was the first one out and he's the runt, poor guy. His rolly-polly sister, Porkchop, likes to use him as her bed. She lays on him and all you see is his tail. LOL Shorty has calmed down about letting me pet/hold them. She now walks off and leaves them alone with me. I got to hear a "baby" bark earlier today when Pork was asleep. The cutest sound I've heard in awhile.
(Yes. That "Mindless" is mine. I forgot to log out of a diff forum before coming here. Sorry about that)
