Foxhounds, I need someone with experience

A fellow teacher I work with recently lost his beagle to cancer and he has started to think about getting another dog. He likes beagles but is considering a larger dog. He ask me about Foxhounds (English and American) as I am the "Dog Guy" at work.

I told his as much as I know about what I have read about Foxhounds but I have very little first hand experience with them. I have met them at dog shows but that is it.

If you have experience with them and something to add besides what they have on the average website on the breed I would appreciate it.

PS I have him willing to look for his puppy from a rescue.

Well, I never owned Foxhounds, but I grew up with Harriers. They are between the Beagles and Foxhounds in size, and just as sweet. I loved them! My grandparents bred them for hunting, and the puppies were very very vocal, but all of ours were trained pretty easily.

See if he is interested in Harriers! :D They are awesome dogs.

I love tri-colour hounds though, those sharp colours are gorgeous.

You could post your question on the Hunting forum at http://www.chronicleforums.com/Forum/. The foxhunters will have a lot of insight into the dogs; I know several of them have pet foxhounds as well.

The fox hounds groups I worked with back in the 90's only place dogs in working homes- they claim these dogs need to be in packs large packs and live outdoors that they do not have the normal pet mentality.

Again just info im passing on cant tell if it was accurate.
But all the UKC shows ive been too the Foxhounds almost all the hounds were owned by serious hunters.

So a breeder may have a pup that does not fit the bill.

That is kinda what I told him, from what I have read they are not known for being house dogs and especially single dogs. He is hoping they are just big beagles. I was hoping I would find a foxhound owner on Chaz that could give me "The pet foxhound" story. He lives in the city of Milwaukee and that doesn't not lead to daily walk on large acreage, unless you go to the dog parks.

I had a fostered a rescue one for a few days with my greyhounds. But have always had a hound or two in my life.

They are runners!!! Never trust them off leash EXCEPT in a fenced yard. I was suppossed to keep my girl that i was fostering but my family couldnt figure out how to watch the door and she kept getting out.

They need LOTS LOTS LOTS of excercise. But when they are inside they tend to be couch potatoes. They are meant to run after fox's ALL day so you have to keep that in consideration. She was smart as could be but very active at 4 years old. I taught her not to pull on teh leash in 30 minutes tops. She didnt really shed much and was the sweetest girl. She was 40 lbs. She got along with everyone loved my baby god nephew and neices to death.

As another plug for Harriers. A friend of the family had one with her cockers and it was the NICEST dog. Definitely a couch potato and loved affection.

Lissa on here has one. We played for a few days around Christmas together. Her Am. Foxhound needs a load more exercise than most people are willing to give. And he's a non stop hunter if let off leash.
