View Full Version : What breeds are quietest?

Eventually I'm going to try to persuade my landlord to let me keep a dog in my apartment. *crosses fingers* What breeds tend to be the quietest? (I know it depends on the individual dog, but in general. ;) )

Here's a list of the noisiest and quietest dogs from PetVR.com (http://www.petvr.com/index.php/pages/noisiesyquietestdogs.html)
I have to disagree a bit with the basenji. Basenjis have a reputation as difficult to train and while they do not bark they do chortle and yodel and make other oddball noises which help to make them endearing.

There are certainly large variations within breeds. In our apartment complex the 2 poodles that right next to me (different apartments) bark constantly, earning their top 10 status on Jason's list.
My mini poodle never barks or vocalizes at all unless someone knocks on the door...then just one yip.
My question for those with experience...if you are looking for a quiet dog is your best solution to find a dog with 2 quiet parents, or are their huge variations even within litters?

MY suggestion would be to go to the local pound and get an adult dog. That way, you know EXACTLY what you are getting as opposed to taking a guess with a puppy.

You can also train a dog to learn when it is acceptable to be loud and rambunctious, and when it is not. It's easier with some breeds than others, but it's hard to say, as stated above, what you're going to get with puppies, even based on the parents.

AMEN TO THAT! They are so noisy.
Best bet is to go and look at adult dogs. Then you'll now excatly what they are like. My sheltie never barked as a pup and grew up to be very vocal.
Not a Papillon, Boemy. XD
My Border Collies are quiet. The pup hasn't made a sound other than quiet whines and growls (and I don't expect her to make much noise at all, all the dogs in her lines are silent workers) and Dakota, who is vocal for a BC, only barks when commanded to or when someone comes to the door.
I do have to throw out a caution about shelter dogs. They may not bark at the shelter, but once they settle in at home they can make more noise than a small jet. I fostered a GSD that was absolutely silent at the shelter and quite the barker/howler at home.
I'd be prepared to work on noise issues with any dog you get. No dog is truly silent, lol.

The noise increases a hundred fold when my dad visits with his Sheltie and Tibetan Spaniel. My APBT only barks when stimulated by play or teased into it.

Athena very rarely barks and
Sal NEVER barks, he will make a whining sound if I leave him in the car alone but its not really a bark. I have asked several of my neighbors if they have ever heard my dogs and they have all said that they never hear my dogs.
So I would say American Staffordshire Terriers are very quiet if raised correctly.

Tosa were very big in the Bronx projects because they would protect so quietly.
My self defense buddy came home to find a part of a finger in the grate they had protecting the windows.
He went next door no one heard a thing..

BY GOD - DO NOT GO WITH A COLLIE EITHER!!
Colt barks a lot. Of course, I knew this beforehand, and some say their herders are quiet, but I think, as a rule, most herders are barkers. (at least Collies and Shelties are).

Basenjis can be quiet. What you would have to worry about is when he or she is alone. They can make a crying sound that can be very alarming. No, they do not bark and they do not yodel unless their emotions tell them to. But, as I said, the crying can scare a neighbor who doesn't know that you have a basenji or what one is. They may think that there is a child alone. That is, of course if you have a basenji that cries.

In my experience yeah, Collies are barkers but on the otherhand I have had some VERY quiet Collies. One of the I have right now. Bailey is very vocal. Chloe rarely barks unless Bailey is on a barking tangent. My last RB Collie (Timmie) ONLY barked when the kids in the neighborhood were on their four wheelers out by the woods. He NEVER barked when someone was at the door or any other time. He would bark when I asked him to "speak". The Collie I had as a kid didn't bark either except in play.
Well, as far as apartment sized dogs go...Cavalier King Charles spaniels are relatively quiet. Some pugs are quiet, some are incredibly noisy...most mini schnazuers are very barky and it's an ear piercing bark at that.
It really does all come down to the induvidual dog and some training. My Aussie is the biggest loudmouth at work, pretty much totally silent at home.

They don't bark, they talk to me. Boy do they ever talk.
That almost mournful cry (obviously saying "MOM FEED ME YOUR FOOD!, i saw you season it better than mine") and those paws start going up and pawing in the air at me, haha.
My Chows are very quiet though.

Bulldogs are sleepy, quiet dogs. My pugs are also very quiet dogs. Not a yappy breed at all and when they do bark, it's more of a muffled "boof" than a bark.

I dont know about all bostons, but joey is a very quiet dog. If he is playing or getting teased by the cats he'll let out a couple barks, but that is it. Of course, since I live in an apartment, I've always discouraged him from barking, so maybe that's why he is quiet. But he sure can snore up a storm, so maybe he's not that quiet after all!;)

I second the idea about going to a shelter to look. If you've never been to an animal shelter, it's insane; every dog barks like a maniac, so the ones who are disinclined to bark really stand out. And you get a good idea of the timbre of bark; I saw an absolutely gorgeous Bouvier in the shelter once who, I swear, probably lost himself a swooning wouldbe owner every time he opened his mouth; he had a bark that would shatter steel.
One thing to keep in mind; while breeds/types like the collies, terriers and toys have well-deserved reputations for nonstop, excruciating barking, some breeds which don't tend to bark a lot have other noise drawbacks. GSDs, for example, don't tend to bark at the drop of a hat, but once they've alerted on something, they seem to drone on and on and on about it. And hounds bay, especially beagles, which are otherwise nice small dogs.

My Shibas don't tend to bark that much, unless it's for a reason. Even then, only Kimi barks when the doorbell rings, Tai rarely does. The only time he makes a peep is when there's something we should know about (ie: suspicious person lurking around our yard, animals running through the back, etc.)
I found that the Shibas at my breeder's house were quite similar. For as many dogs as she had there (she has a thriving boarding kennel that many of her puppy buyers use), there was never all that much noise.
HOWEVER...when it comes time to clip nails they do SCREAM. And it literally sounds like someone is being killed. This sound is so well known throughout the Shiba fancy that you can buy bumper stickers that say "I survived the Shiba Scream," and "Shibas do it screaming." (Naughty one, I know ;) ).
So, while they aren't the dog to bark mindlessly for hours while you're away (they're Japan's most popular apartment dog!) they CAN be VERY loud when they feel the occassion calls for it.

We train our dogs to bark and then say "enough" and they stop. Of course they will bark at strangers near the house and so on but they know when we say "enough" they stop and are told they are good for doing so. I guess you are thinking along the lines of the dog barking when you are not at home. How many hours max do you think you will be away at any one time?

02-15-2007, 06:49 PM
Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking of. My previous dog was trained to be quiet (too effectively--later we tried to teach her "speak" but she wouldn't bark at all, oh well!) and was naturally quiet anyway (border collie / lab mix), but of course you can only shush them with a command when you're present. If the dog barks a lot and takes three months to train, the landlord is probably going to say forget it!
I'm 99% sure I'd go to a shelter, but I've heard that some dogs are basically in shock there and are incredibly well-behaved when you first take them home before realizing "hey, I'm HOME!" and relaxing. So that's one reason I'm curious as to what breeds are naturally quiet . . . though I do realize it varies from dog to dog!
I work 7 - 4, but am close enough that I can drive home for lunch. But that would be my only opportunity to get home before getting off work, on weekdays.

Talking about Shibas reminded me of one of my other favorite breeds. Akitas. They don't bark much at all, from what I've experienced. They'd rather observe silently, and save the bark for if they truly need it. Dogos, on the other hand, have a bark like a bullhorn, and they don't mind using it. (They also woo-woo, babble, mutter, howl, yodel, etc etc.)

Some breeds are, of course, predisposed to barking... I think the barkiest dogs I know of are Mini Schnauzers, Bassets, and Beagles. I would steer clear of any hounds, and most toy breeds.
However, it does seem like more of a training issue (and an exercise issue) than anything, for most dogs. Fozzie is half Corgi and PROBABLY half Beagle, and he almost never barks. Those are 2 breeds that are known for barkiness, and he had started being vocal as a puppy, but I taught him to "chill out". When he hears that he automatically stops and lays down. Gonzo (Border Collie) almost *never* barks, and when he does it's a single alarm bark, so I think growing up with a quiet dog taught Fozzie to not bark excessively.

I agree with the Cavalier Kind Charles and pug. Stay away from chis, dachshunds, min pings, jack russels because in general they can be barky dogs if not trained properly.
I know many Shih tzus from my friends and family and none of them are barky at all. I have trained Charlie though to make sure he is not barky, but from my experience they are not a barky breed.
I have also never met a Cocker Spaniel that is barky either, but I have heard a lot of feedback that differs from the breed standard we see with them in Canada compared to the breeding in the US.

I think Dachshunds should be on the top barking breeds list. Who knows, maybe they're number 11 and we only saw the top 10. lol I do know that I've lived in two different apartment complexes and some how in each one I have neighbors with barking Dachshunds! I think people chose them for apartments because they're small and have low maintenance hair, so they seem like an "easy" breed. But Dachshunds have a terrier personality (bred to go after vermin underground so they're more terrier than scent hound). They're very vocal and strong willed so it's not like you can easily train most of them to not bark.
Another breed that I've known to be fairly barky is the American Eskimo. Wouldn't recommend that one for an apartment where your landlord is already not crazy about you having a dog.
I think most toy breeds tend to be fairly barky- especially Yorkies, Pekingese, Toy Poodles, and Lhasa Apsos.

Along with the breed I also think it has to do with what noises a dog is use to. I lived in an apartment with my dog who is a Ducth Shepard/Cattle Dog cross and he was very quiet when I was away. I got him at 4 months and he grow up with the noises in the hallways. The times he did bark was when he had energy and needed to get out and play. I lived in more of a garden home where its 3 floors and only 4 aparments to the floor so there was very minimual traffic in the hallway for Duke to get barky at to begin with. Take that into consideration as well. Are your hallways constantly busy during the day which will cause the dog to be more on alert or are they quiet. The dogs that lived in the apartments where I use to live that where quiet, I dont know much about breeds that are prone to bark, but the ones that where quiet where, my neighbour who had a lab and hed only bark when the door from the stairs opened but it was one bark and stopped, then my b/f has a french mastiff and he's really quiet and only lets out little woofs every now and then when kids are running down the hall but on the other hand my b/fs friend has his dogs sister from the same litter and she gets into barking fits when hes gone sometimes, then there was a boxer that did wonderful. Bunch of mutts. But I really think alot is to do with the dog and whats its use to noise wise and also how territorial the dog is. Also its about your neighbours. Some neighbours dont mind a bark here or there as long as its not constant and too later but others with the slittest sounds will complain. Sorry the post was so long. Good luck finding whatever dog suits you best.

I've known a couple of Shih tzus and they were both quiet dogs. I think the Pug sounds like a good dog for an apartment.
My Chihuahuas are very quiet unless someone is at the door, drives up the driveway, seen on a walk, when the UPS man is here, when I stomp my snow off my boots outside the door, when a coffee up is set down too hard in another room, when another dog barks on TV. LOL. When they're just hanging out and nothing happens, they're quiet as a mouse. And they're good about stopping when I tell them "enough." Well, Chulita is really good. Jose` is not perfect.
My Doberman doesn't bark unnecessarily. But my son's dog barks the most of all of our dogs. She is worse than my Chi's and she's a GSD-Pit mix, we think. She has yet to be taught better that she doesn't have to react to every little thing. She has the most abrupt and loud bark. She will stop when you ask her to, but my goodness and then she starts again. It's quite annoying.
Along with the breed I also think it has to do with what noises a dog is use to
Definitely. I can attest to that. When I first visited my daughter's apartment in Seattle, the dogs barked at all kinds of noises....neighbors closing their doors, people talking and walking on the street below, traffic, car alarms.... These things do NOT happen where we live. But as I visited a few more times and even though I only go there about 4 times a year, they are onto the idea that it is normal there for these noises but it would not be normal here. And they're all relatively quiet when we visit, thank goodness.
