What are their activity levels like? I know it can vary depending on the dog but on average? How long do they live for? How much should the average sized beagle be fed? What are health problems that the breed has? Is there anything specific to the beagle breed a person should know about before adopting one? Any other questions you think someone should know before getting one don;t be afraid to answer.

My mom is interested in taking a 6 yearold beagle from a lady at her church. She asked me if I could get any information about beagles. She's only ever owned shelties and a few collie crosses. The dog is said to be good with kids. The reason the lady needs to get rid of it is because they aren't aloud dogs where they live. I don't really understand it but whatever. Everyone has different priorities.

beagles can make a great family dog--they are generally happy, eager to be with people, and friendly. They are pack oriented (usually a pack is used in hunting) so they don't like to be alone. they are vocal--will bark alot if left alone. But they are hounds--their nose will take over their brains in a nano-second! Never leave a beagle off leash--or he will take off in a flash. They will eat everything and anything available--so you have to watch their diet. They love to roll in smelly stuff--the more disgusting the smell--the better!! they are loyal, lovable, and will make you laugh--but are somewhat difficult to train due to their hound-brain--very distracted by sights and sounds. Grooming is easy--short coat, easily washed and brushed. All that being said--I love my beagle (mix)--he is so fun!

Beagles are the bomb!!

Seriously, great description by Baxter. I have two of them. Their noses are extremely powerful. They want to smell everything, which can make them a little tough to walk, but I find it very comical.

They are great with people, super-friendly. My two beagles just love to cuddle with everyone.

It's wise to keep them busy because they are active dogs.

I love beagles -- great dogs!

The only reason I don't have one, is I can't trust one on our offleash hikes ;)

All of the beagles I've known have been pretty laid back in the house, and then ready to run all day when they can.

Alrighty! She wants my opinion on him so I am going with her to church and after to meet this dog. She said he's a real sweetpea. I am hoping she takes him for the sake of the dog. The lady doesn't sound like she wants him at all. Not to ill of her. I just have the dogs best interest at heart.

On another recent thread Beagles were listed as the loudest dog, and I know a couple near me that have robust voices on their walks. They also seem very happy and comical dogs....fun to be around.

However, it was also pointed out that there are HUGE differences in noise, activity level, and temperament between dogs. That's why its great you mom is considering an adult dog.....you should be able to tell what he is like after a couple of days.

I hope your mom is able to take the dog for a week or so before making a final decision. If it does not work out, she should try hard to help find the dog another home.
