I have a Shih Tzu that I'm interested in showing. I have a fair amount of knowledge into showing dogs. (not a lot, never did it before but yes I know the rules and stuff) Anyone have any tips on how to treat a shih tzu's coat when growing it out to be nice, long and silky??
Any tips on this would be greeeeat!

I don't have a shih tzu but I do know that for yorkies they put a little oil on their hair to keep the shine. You can probably find more info on the net

Obviously this cant be on the coat when it actually goes into the ring, this would be against KC rules, and if random coat test done disqualification may follow.

While the coat is growing out you may want to wrap it to prevent breakage. Oil is an idea. Chris Christiensen has great pin brushes to brush with. I am afraid a slicker may break hair if there are any knots. The few maltese I groom in full coat are retired from the ring and the slicker the owner uses does produce broken flyaways.

Wrapping is very good advice. You may want to try that.

I show a Yorkie but I'll tell you what I've been told by my friends who show Tzus. I've also sent a link to this thread to a friend who own Puresilk Kennels and is the owner of Pure Paws pet shampoos. OK that said:
Someone suggested wrapping:
My understanding is that Tzu's are not wrapped but they are banded (unlike Yorkies who are banded). Oiling the coat also depends on the texture (how much to use and whether to blend it with a conditioner. you need to be careful which condititioner you use because some are not meant to be left in the coat). As mentioned, I use Pure Paws products and also Plush Puppy. If you go to the pure paws site, they have coat care recommendations uploaded which you can download as a pdf. It will explain how to wash and condition your specific breed's coat:

If that doesn't work - contact me, I don't want to get in "trouble" for putting a link to my own website in this forum but do have a link to pure paws which will work there.
Good luck!

I would find a show/breed mentor that can help you. Attend dog shows and watch the Tzu's in the ring. Ask questions, but most of all, I would have an evaluation done on your pooch by a reputable and seasoned Tzu breeder and handler before you take the leap. You should also read up on your breed standard to make sure your pup does not have any disqualifying faults etc. In the standard it will discuss the length and texture of the coat as well as colors and markings that are and are not acceptable in the ring. Good luck and I wish you well...showing is my passion and you will have a blast :)

You might also want to try some of the trade magazines like Top Notch Toys or The Shih Tzu Reporter. There is a really good Shih Tzu grooming video advertised in ther by Greg and Tammarie Larson.
Good Luck!
