Hartselle boy injured in dog attack

(Updated: Tuesday, January 30, 2007 7:50 AM CST)

Clif Knight, Hartselle Enquirer

A 13-year-old Hartselle boy received a serious facial injury when he was attacked by a chow dog in the home of a neighbor on January 9.

Michael Ellis was bitten in the mouth at approximately 5:30 p.m. when he went to the home of Willodean Rainey at 509 Broadway Street to bring home his younger brother, Christopher, according to his mother, Debbie Ellis. The dog’s bite left him without part of his lower lip and he had to have emergency surgery at Decatur General Hospital A plastic surgeon used 50 stitches to close the wound but additional surgery will be required to rebuild the youth’s lip.

Bitten in the mouth?

Poor kid. It's horrible that even though they closed the wound that his lip will never be the same.

I had a chow chow growing up and he was THE sweetest dog ever. The only time he ever acted aggressively was when my ex-uncle in law came over very angry and was acting in a hostile manner. Simba (the chow) made it clear that was not acceptable and that the guy needed to leave. Had the guy continued on I can guarentee he would have been bit.

But I think any dog would have done that.

Simba was excellent with my then 5 year old niece.

Heck, our lab did the same thing, someone came to the door claiming to be selling something (siding, or magazine subscriptions or something) The situation was fishy, Katie, our labrador, did not like the person at all, she had to be held back, because she really wanted to get this guy. Turns out, there were a whole bunch of break ins around that time & we are sure that the guy who came over was trying to "survey" our house for valuables. Katie was nice to every other stranger she met.

If grooming wasnt an issue, I wouldnt ever mind having one. They are nice dogs.

I like Chows myself. Heck, I like every breed that's been labeled "vicious", "aggressive", "bad" all because I know otherwise. And to boot I've never been bitten by an "aggressive" breed but have been bitten by many a "family friendly my dog never bites anyone" kind of breeds.

But you're right, I do NOT do grooming!:p

For all of these stories I cant help but wonder, where are the parents?

I agree--I like all the dogs who are labeled inappropriately as well. You know, people tell me ALL of the time that Dalmatians are the meanest breed they have met. I have heard so many horror stories about Dalmatians BUT I have 2who wouldnt hurt a fly.

It's kind of embarassing to admit, but I have gotten to where when I volunteer at the shelter, I will walk straight up to a pit but I steer wide when it comes to "lap dogs". It's embarassing to admit you are scared of smaller dogs, but they in my experience seem to be more nervous and more likely to "not take kindly" to a stranger.
