GSP defends owners from 2 pit bulls (http://www.nonpareilonline.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=17734795&BRD=2703&PAG=461&dept_id=555106&rfi=6)

Atleast the owner of the 2 pit bulls has been found and no one else was hurt in the process.

Kudos to the pointer for helping its family! Poor guy, I hope he gets better. I especially hope he doesn't have any emotional problems after this trauma.

There is one thing in that article that bothered me a tad. The quote from the boy's mother after the attack:

"That pit bull was trying to get into my house and a hold of my son."

According to the story, the female pit bull entered the yard and attacked the boy's daschund mix puppy, who was in the yard with the boy at the time. The child was bitten while he and his father were trying to beat the pit bull off the pup.

I'm not trying to excuse the pit bull. Any dog with dog aggression so severe that it would break into a fenced yard to attack an immature puppy is not a safe animal. But it is sad that the woman thinks that pit bull was a monster out to kill her child.

But at the same time, I guess I can't really blame her for thinking that. :(

I can't believe the owner of those pit bulls only received a citation for a loose dog.

I don't think there was any mention of a father involved in the story... just the mother, Christy Thomas.

But yes, that statement was a bit ludicrous. If I was in that situation I think I'd still be in a state of shock ... nothing that would have come out of my mouth would have made much sense.

Oops, you're right. Sorry. There's just the mother. I guess the name "Thomas" threw me off.

Yeah, the woman was probably going through a lot. I can't imagine having a dog attack your kid. It'd have to be very scary. I don't think this will do much to raise her perception of pit bulls though. I kind of can't blame her because the fear of harm to her child is probably (and should be) the first thing on her mind. Hopefully later she'll realize that it is the owner's fault this happened. Owners who let these things happen provide the conformation that the general public needs to believe that pit bulls are evil, vile creatures out looking to kill. It is the pits' owner's fault that this happened to the puppy, the boy, and the pit bulls. And it is also his fault that there will be repercussions for pits to once again overcome because he let his dogs run free. The public sees one incident like this, no matter how many alternatives to this stereotype they see, and they feel justified in thinking the way they do.

Dogfights are scary. Especially when one dog is obviously outmatched.

the worst part is, the people just got a citation for loose dogs, i honestly belive they not only are responsible for any vet and medical care for the dogs and humans, but people that allow dogs that agressive run loose (if you know your dogs are dog agressive it is YOUR responsibility to proved the correct containment be it a 10ft fence or a roofed pen.)
i mean a dog doesnt suddenly go from being fine with other dogs to being that agressive to attack a puppy so my guess is the pits people would have noticed and therefore its there responisbility to keep those dogs confined...
after all its the pits owners that are at fault, not the dogs themselves. they shoudl have never had the oportunity and its those owners that give politicians the hand they need for BSL...
I hope that poor gsp recovers quickly.

I read on another forum, from someone who got an update via TV news, that the pit owner would be required to pay for the vet bills.

The pit owner should spend some time in jail

The pit owner should spend some time in jail

I totally agree (actually Prison instead of Jail) he should also be banned from owning dogs for life.

I do hope the owner has liability insurance because he's gonna need it. That citation is going to be the least of his worries.

YEAH Titus!!! I really hope that poor pup pulls through. What a brave guy! The unconditional love he has for his owners is awesome!

AGREED! They should be arrested for harboring a dangerous weapon. People will never seise to amaze me! Can there be an IQ test given before people are allowed to have dogs??? Some kind of aptitude test maybe???

That's horrific! That poor family. I hope they all recover from this quickly...

Is it so hard to keep your animals contained? Obviously these particular dogs were vicious, but it wouldn't even have happened if they would have been kept on their owner's property. It's so sad and unnecessary.
