This is just sad

and ridiculous.

It's much worse on First Nations reserves. People let their dogs pack up. It has nothing at all to do with pit bulls. Just people not taking care of their dogs. They pack up and go looking for food because no one is feeding them :(

Hm, considering this is in Sask, I just might check it out a little more.

5 year old found lying in a road, out there long enough that he managed to catch hypothermia in addition to being mauled? Where are this childs parents! I would never let a 5 year old be unsupervised, much less near a road! Someone please tell me I am reading this wrong.

The reserves are a pretty horrible place. To say there are terrible social problems :alcoholism, drug abuse, extreme poverty, neglect, child abuse, incest etc etc would be a huge understatement. It's very sad, really awful:( .

Not all reserves or even Métis settlements are the same Sam. There are a lot of good people out there. And a lot of people trying to make changes. I wouldn't call them a horrible place at all. I actually really like going out there. They have a lot of neat events and the schools are always fun. There are some scary people but you are more likely to run into them at the bars in town then on the reserves.

It's neat to see how much the different bands make a difference on how the reserves are. It's pretty much the Cree nation out here and they are a lot rowdier then when I lived near the KitsumKalum band in Terrace. That was a very peaceful, artistic, nature loving community! They had their share of rowdies too though ;)

Fair enough.
My cousins are metis, some of them are fullblooded natives (my aunt had them before she married my uncle and left the reserve) so I guess I hear mostly about the reserve they came from and it's not so good-- although far from the worst in Canada from what i've read or seen on the news.
I'm glad there are other bands doing better.:)
The plight of natives in this country (in general) makes me very sad. I'm not sure what needs to happen to fix the problems but I hope things change.

There are lots of people working on it! I just wrote and article for Sweetgrass, Alberta's native newspaper, that's really interesting. It's going in Windspeaker next month too so you could pick it up. Hobbema is by far the worst reserve I've been to but I wasn't there long. It might be the worst in Canada. Actually, I think Hobbema is the town, not the reserve. I'm not sure the name of the reserve. Some crazy people there!

Is there a link for us to read your article?

*Slaps forhead*

I just figured out what the reserves were. For some reason I was thinking army reserves.... And I live in Oklahoma too.

They don't have this month's edition on the net yet Sam. It will be here though whenever they get around to it
