Ugh. That is disgusting. I'm so happy that the puppy survived, though.

Ugh.

The worst case I've ver dealt with at the clinic was one in which an absolutely gorgeous black APBT was drug behind a truck with the rope tied to the dog's collar. Witnesses said the guy went more than a half a mile before they were able to make him pull over. I know 1 witness called 911. And despite the guys claims of the dog jumping out the bed of the truck (which we've seen too many times to count), the kicker was the other end of the rope was tied to the guy's trailer hitch. Imagine that.

Anyways, I named the dog Malachi & he lived & recouperated at our clinic for almost 4 months. He lost almost both back feet & several toes off the front feet. His hide was basically nonexistent & he had so much road rash & asphalt embedded in him that it took 5 surgeries to clean the majority of it out. He lost part of his upper lip & several teeth were knocked out. One ear was completely gone & his tail was nothing more than bone. We could actually see bone in several other places as well.

However, when I rushed out to the woman's car (a witness who brought the dog into us) & saw the dog & the blood everywhere, I knew he would be an immediate PTS. I also had a rope muzzle with me but to my surprise, this dog actually lifted his tail up & down twice at me. I grabbed him & rushed him into the back & yelled for a vet to meet me there. It took a lot of persuading of my bosses (& some of my paychecks being docked for the next few months) to give this dog a chance as long as a) it was possible for him to recover & b) that we just weren't putting him through too much pain.

Malachi now lives at the firehouse down the street from the clinic as they were the ones that responded to the incident. He's a glorious 65 lbs of fatness (he should weigh about 50-55....) & can run & play like no other. We never cropped the other ear as the fire cheif thought it gave him character to just have that 1 ear. Malachi can also run & play & one would never guess that he's missing par of his back paws & toes off the front paws. I really wanted to keep him, but after like the 10th visit from the firemen to come see how he was doing, I knew that they could & would give him a life as the only dog that I couldn't offer him.

As for the perp involved in all of this, I believe he walked away with a fine.

That's sad. Animal cruelty laws are way too lax. Extreme animal cruelty like you were talking about should be a felony, period, no questions asked, if he treated his dog this way, how do you think he treats people?!?!?

Glad to her that boy got a happy ending though. Bless you for helping to pay for his vet expenses.
