CLEVELAND - The U.S. Department of Agriculture will send an inspector to a hospital where a neurosurgeon demonstrating a medical device to salespeople deliberately induced a brain aneurysm in a dog, which was later destroyed.

The Cleveland Clinic, known for its heart center and for treating high-profile patients such as royalty, said that it had not authorized the procedure. The hospital reported itself to the USDA, which regulates animal testing.

A neurosurgeon caused the brain aneurysm in the anesthetized animal Wednesday at the clinic’s Lerner Research Institute in Cleveland to demonstrate a medical device to a group of 20 to 25 salespeople. The large, mixed-breed dog was destroyed afterward because of the damage caused by the aneurysm, the clinic said.

Darby Holladay, spokesman for the USDA, would not comment on whether the clinic may have violated the Animal Welfare Act or what penalties it could face.

“We’re just trying to determine what occurred here,” he said.

The Animal Welfare Act sets minimum standards of care for dogs and other warmblooded animals but does not prohibit their use in medical device demonstrations, the USDA said.

An aneurysm is an abnormal bulge in a blood vessel, which can burst and cause severe damage or death. The medical device that was demonstrated fills a brain aneurysm with a coil to stop bleeding.

In a letter to the USDA, the clinic said the hospital’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee had approved the aneurysm being induced in the dog but not the use of the device on the animal. The clinic said the committee also did not approve use of the dog in the sales demonstration. The Associated Press obtained the letter through the Freedom of Information Act.

OMG, I don't know what else to say right now except my Aunt has received heart treatment there in the past.

It really bothers me, but it was used for science, and if the dog was going to be put down anyway, then it might as well have been used for some good first.

Oy.

It was not used for science per say.....it was used as a sales pitch. I can accept the fact that animals are used for scientific advancement/study, but to deliberately induce a brain aneurysm in a dog, solely for the purpose of selling a product is wrong in my opinion.

A neurosurgeon caused the brain aneurysm in the anesthetized animal Wednesday at the clinic’s Lerner Research Institute in Cleveland to demonstrate a medical device to a group of 20 to 25 salespeople

It was not going to be euthanized anyways, it was euthanized because of the aneurysm.

The large, mixed-breed dog was destroyed afterward because of the damage caused by the aneurysm, the clinic said.

They should have at least shown how the device works and saved the dog....

In a letter to the USDA, the clinic said the hospital’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee had approved the aneurysm being induced in the dog but not the use of the device on the animal.

How is it a good sales pitch if the salespeople could not even observe the device in action? "Trust Me, It Works" just doesn't cut it, they should have used the device to save the dog and shown all present that it was actually a viable tool.

Yes, definitely had nothing to do with science. It had to do with a total jackass who deserves to go to jail.
This is sickening. I completely disagree with human things being tested on animals in any situation. But this just goes far and beyond. If I could get my hands around that guy's neck, boy would he be sorry.

This is very embarassing for me because I am from Cleveland. It makes me very ashamed. The only saving grace is that The Cleveland Clinic turned themselves in as soon as they heart what this blankity blank 'doctor' did.
I saw an update on the story Friday night that said they usually obtain dogs from breeders who breed them for medical experiments not from shelters. THAT is what really scares me. Those who do that are 10 time worse then a back yard breeder imho.

But that sales pitch, will have hospitals everywhere wanting to buy that tool, in the end saving lives.

It sucks, sure, but at least they anethetised the dog first. For all we know it could have been a dog from a shelter that would have been euthanised anyway.

I don't see why you should be ashamed, stuff like that could and probably does happen in any town, at any time, if it happened here I would be appalled, and angry, just the same as I am that it happened in Cleveland, or even if it was in another country, but not embarrassed or ashamed unless I had a hand in it or helped to cover it up. It could be your neighbors and it still isn't something you would agree with or defend them for.

As for the breeders that breed for research...........it is horrible and disgusting to look at our own little fur babies and imagine, but I guess it's not all that different from pig farmers, or cattle ranches, mink farmers, or alligator farms, fish farms.................the list goes on and on we just don't like to think of them. :( I guess the only difference is all the other animals for food or skin will get to die quick. If you want vaccines/meds that work for your dog, they have to be tested. Or any other things that we enjoy medically..........I don't think it's right, but how can you get around it? I am just like the majority and choose not to dwell on how the meds got here.

But this sales pitch thing really p****s me off, it was useless torture, but maybe the dog is out of his misery from being kept in a research cage!

Thanks I really appreciate what you are saying. :)
I guess the reason I feel embarrased or ashamed is becuase Cleveland has been the butt of jokes for so long, most of us take it a little personal because we love this city. The one thing that we had that was world class was The Cleveland Clinic. To have this happen, it is very embarassing for me as a Clevelander.

Hey, I lived in Vermillion Ohio growing up as a kid, right on lake erie, I loved it, I have shopped in Cleveland many times, love cedar point, and still have family in the area. I don't think that one person will hesitate to use the clinic when they want the best! They saved my baby sister who was born premature twenty nine years ago, my mom had her at six months, she was 2 lb 9 ounces, hole in one lung...............pretty much toast. If we had been any where else, she probably wouldn't have made it, I mean 29 years ago! Now it's not that big of a deal..........probably thanks to Cleveland Clinic!

So chin up, and still be proud of your city!
