I have finally worked up the courage to clip Dukes nails myself. While I am clipping his nails should I also trim down the hair between his pads? Will this cause discomfort for him if the hair is not trimmed?

If you want to, you can. It won't cause him any discomfort unless he goes out in the snow where he can get iseballs stuck to long pad hair. I always trim Tango's pad hair simply because I don't at all like the appearance of fuzzy feet (especially on my own dogs). I trim hers every couple of weeks to give it a tidier, neater appearance and also to prevent her from getting iceballs. However, she's a long coated dog so her paw hair would grow very long if I didn't trim it. If your dog is smooth or short coated (with just a bit of hair sticking out), you can also trim it, but short coated dogs don't tend to get iceballs and such.

I tend to not trim in the winter for paw protection against cold .....but this winter it's only brought in more mud ! Ice balls don't take long to get rid of...if I clip ... I'm sure we''ll have 4 inches of snow tomorrow !

I trim Cider's. If I didn't it would cover her pads fully. If I've slacked for a few weeks she looses traction and is like a commercial where the dog flies into corners, walls...

Also it caused really uncomfy ice balls on new years..

This will be my first winter with a longer coated dog. He is like a "swiffer". He collects and brings in dirt/mud like I have never seen. I have not experienced ice balls yet, because where we live in Pa., it has been unseasonably warmer. It is getting colder, so maybe we will get some snow this winter. I have had a groomer keep his hair cut on his feet, and I keep after it and trim it. It is easier to keep his paws wiped after he comes in from outside when the fur is not too long between his toes.

all dogs should have their pads clipped out clean with clippers and or scissored flush with the pad, clipping is best the hair causes discomfort infection and tends to mat
