thanks. when i was searching, i found a program that was actually in my county! It was shocking. here's the link:

The problem is that they don't post this anywhere so people can see it. I promise you that very few people know about it. it needs to be in newspapers and in stores. most people won't look it up on the internet, and if they did it would take 30 minutes.:(

Wow! That's great! That is such a good price. I am always searching for the cheapest places around here and always make sure to have them handy becuase I hear people grumble and complain all the time about how expensive regular vet clinics are.

bubbatd: Did you have a bad experience with a low cost clinic? They are all trained vets just like a regular vet office. They just offer low cost options so more people can afford it. I have been using and recommending them for years and never had or heard of any problems locally. I know people all over the US who search for the low cost clinics and only maybe once or twice ever heard of complications.

I worked at a low cost spay/neuter vet clinic. It was our "specialty." We were a full service clinic, but a lot of people came to us for spaying and neutering. We neutered cats for $19.95 and a small dog was $34.95. In the 5 years I worked there we had an average of 5 surgeries a day and they all went very well and were very routine. All the animals got complete care, anesthetic and monitoring etc. In the 5 years we lost 2 cats to complications with the anesthetic (owners refused pre-surgical blood work) and that was it.

So, not all low cost spay and neuters are bad. The clinics offer the procedures at cost and don't make a profit. They do this with the hopes to establish long term clients that will pay for other services down the road.

I wish I'd gone to a low-cost clinic! Or anywhere else, really. I've had a horrible experience with a vets office. Licensed vets who were reccomended by two friends. My kittens were about 7 months old and one went into heat. We flipped out, as this is something we had never dealt with before and had not taken into consideration when they were younger and we were thinking about spaying. (S-T-U-P-I-D, I know.) Chil was.. ah.. shall we say "rubbing herself" against our male cat (neutered) and us, she was yowling constantly and picking fights with Emma (our other kitten). We panicked and immediately called several vets offices to get them both spayed--as Em was a week younger and we weren't anticipating this happening again. Only one could do it on such short notice, we got an appointment for three days later. Chili was almost $75 more because she was in heat.

We came back later that day (they informed us that we had to pick them up right after the operation as the office wasn't going to be staffed for the next few days) and I followed the receptionist into the back where I got to see my two babies in a dirty (YES! Grimy! No kidding.) metal cage lying on top of eachother with a soiled rag soaked in iodine for company. She grabbed Chili and dumped her into our carrier, and I hurriedly picked up Emma so she would not suffer the same treatment, and put her gently into the carrier. We hurrier out, with both of the cats hissing wildly and crawling around, with occasional forlorn mewls. I was panicked and sobbing because Chili didn't recognize me (she's my baby.. I panick over everything when it has to do with her), and my mother was flipping out because Emma had tried to bite me. On Lizzey's suggestion, we went to her vet, because we knew there was something wrong (it would have been rather hard not to notice something..). The vets informed us about the procedure, were horrified that:
a.) They let us take the cats right after the procedure
b.) Put the kitties into the same cage and carrier
c.) Gave the no painkiller
d.) Did not stitch or staple their wounds
e.) Did not clean their wounds
f.) And that they did not warn us about how cats act after anesthesia.

Our vet gave them painkillers, gave us two extra dosages in case they seemed hurting the next day, and cleaned & stapled their wounds. She insisted on giving us all of that for free because of our rather traumatic experience, the only thing she made us pay for was the cardboard carrier we put Emma in.

Over the next several weeks we had to go back regularly due to persistent infections and high fevers. Emma was considerably better off, but Chili came close to dying twice. Our vet, after the third visit, said she was shocked Chili hadn't died already.

Overall: We paid nearly $400 for their actual spaying, quite a bit thereafter for their continued treatment.

They're both alive and well now, though. So, if you're worried about what can go wrong with spaying and neutering? Everything can. Please, please research wherever you're getting your dog fixed at. References are probably good. I'm not saying events like this are common (I sure hope they're not!). I've never known anyone who had any problems with neutering their animals, so I hope I'm in the minority.
