Ok, so Buddy's socialization was halted with his parvo when he was a young pup, but after he was cleared, we began right away.

We took him everywhere with us, to dog parks, pet stores, we let anyone and everyone pet him and we introduced him to new situations, etc..

But lately, he's been jumpy.

The day after Christmas we were at a rest stop on our home from visiting family. We took both boys out on their extended leashes to get some walking in and to relieve themselves.

Buddy was so engrossed in sniffing the ground that he didn't see, nor possibly hear the young boy who had sort of approached (he was about 10 feet away) and asked if he could pet our dogs. Buddy suddenly startled, his hackles raised a bit and he barked and took a step back. I quickly walked away with Buddy while hubby stayed behind with Banzai and let the boy pet Banzai.

Buddy has always been a people-dog. He just loves attention. But, lately, it seems he gets scared of situations so easily.

I don't want to put Buddy in positions in which he feels he needs to defend himself, nor in positions where he will get startled. But we were simply walking! And I know it was a new area, we had visited this rest stop before, but never gone out to walk where we walked before.

We no longer go to the dog park as it just proved to be an unsafe venture (Buddy attacked too many times and Banzai once- we're done with that). We go on walks and we play with them, they still go to the dog/pet stores with us...

Any thoughts?

It really sounds like Buddy was just totally engrossed in catching up on the news. When you're out like that with him, try distracting him to keep him from being quite so focused so that he remains more aware of what's going on around him.

Kharma gets focused like that, too, lol!

Thanks, Renee.

One time we were walking along and a dog on the other side of a fence barked and Buddy jumped nearly 4 feet.

I had really hoped we could make him a therapy dog, but with him being so jittery... I just don't know.

I don't see Buddy being happy being a therapy dog. I've had pets who were therapy animals and really enjoyed it, but the majority really don't. Out of my bunch, Shiva would enjoy it immensely - the other two, especially Bimmer, would be completely miserable.

Out of curiosity, why not, Renee? I agree with you, of course, but there was a time when we thought he would be a great therapy dog...

>> Also curious, Renee...

IMO a lot of dogs don't enjoy therapy because it's very stressful. Depending on where you go (of course), people may be sick, depressed, frustrated, whatever. I don't know about you, but I hate going to hospitols or nursing homes... I don't like the envoirnment at all, lol... Some dogs feel the very same way...
On top of that the dog needs to be bathed before hand, and on their very best behavior. It can be stressful ;)

Yeah, it can be stressful, but he's such a love bug! :)

But I definitely do NOT want to put him in any stressful situations, especially considering his immune system.

Maybe Banzai would be a good therapy dog. :D That boy isn't disturbed by anything!
