Rain.... literally putting a damper on things... HELP!

so we've been making so much progress with princess in the crate and house training department. she doesnt whine nearly as much in the crate and she sleeps through the night... only has... er... had about one accident a week in the house... until today...

in the 3 weeks that we've had her... we havent had any rain... today... a lot... and she refuses to 'GO' in the rain... and with that being said... she has GONE... twice in the house today. two number ones.. and one number two! am i doing something wrong? or is she just skiddish cuz shes never seen or been in the rain?

I am having the exact same problem with our bernese mountain dog puppy. She hates the rain and will usually run outside and pee but will not poop outside. I think it's probably the rain is a little scarey. You may have to actually walk outside with your puppy on a leash that may help. We noticed that is helping with our puppy. Usually we let her out on a tie out cable but since all the rain today I started taking her back out on her leash agian.

I took mine out on leash in rain and snow and stood there often under an umbrella and said go potty. After a long enough amount of time she'd go back in the crate if she didn't go. Got a lot faster about doing her business in nasty weather.

does the sound seem to bother her or is is just the sensation of water droplets hitting her. If its the droplets then you can use an umbrella or find some over hanging in your yard that will keep the water off her. Maybe she does not like wet grass, of course that would mean that you'd have to go in the dirt and get muddy paws:rolleyes: If the sound bothers her (hitting a tin over hanging over your door, hitting the cement, water falling off the roof) then you should try to find a quite place farther from your house in the grass to muffle any sounds. In the rain my dog will go fast as long as there is a bush he can pee on. I walk him out and he will go straight to the bush that is right next to the front steps, then run back in.

If I were you, I wouldn't try to protect her with an umbrella. I'd go out and take a little walk and have some fun. Act like this is just great, take some treats and a squeeky toy and act like it's the most natural thing in the world, which it is. LOL. She'll get use to it. Walk away from the house, down the road and toss the toy a little ways...if she's into toys. Give a treat every few steps (a tiny treat). If she's cold, put a coat on her. But don't let her fear or dislike of the rain cause you to be trepitidious. Act confident and like it's all good. Keep at it. She'll get use to it.

I agree with the above post, especially because I've lived with Dachshunds all my life pretty much. They are very, very difficult to housebreak in general and rain and/or snow sets you back a lot. If mine, no matter what I do, won't go then I bring them back in the house and keep them on a leash or crate them as I know if they get any freedom whatsoever (even the 7yr old in "bad" weather), they'll go wherever they please.

you may have to actually walk outside with your puppy on a leash...

I know it sounds crazy and outlandish, but its what you need to do. Put her on a leash and walk her until she goes to the bathroom! If she hesitates, keep walking and give her a small treat (after she resumes walking).

Don't just stand there and point at the ground and say "potty." Actually walk her, stimulate her bowels, and act as if nothing is wrong (and that everything is right).

My dog hates the rain, but with one of these on she will stay out for hours...
