what does a shed control shampoo do? does it loose the under coat to make them shed really bad for a day or so and then they dont shed for a while because all of the under coat come out because of the shampoo?
Ruckus is shedding fur balls everywhere! today is line brushing day, i know that will help out alot. i am wondering what else i could do

How old is he? He may be switching into his adult coat which can cause mass shedding!
I don't know about the shedding shampoos. Any bathing will loosen dead hair and help with shedding. I think the best remedy for excessive shedding is diet. If the issue is his adult coat coming in, then the only thing you can do it wait.

Light shedding year round is normal, and heavy shedding in Spring too (when dogs shed their undercoat), but excessive and constant shedding is not.
What kind of dog do you have and how long has it been going in?

Shedding is a common thing for shelties year round, especially indoor ones. Shedding happens all year, but there are massive sheds a couple times a year. Nikki sheds much worse than Trey. It's horrible sometimes. The best thing I can tell you is to get a rake for him and use it daily. It'll get out a lot of the shedding undercoat. Good brushing daily and lots of vacuuming lol. Never used a shed control shampoo before, so I have no idea. But yes, shedding and shelties go together unfortunately.

All of my Collies have been indoor dogs but they never profusely shed their undercoat at this time of year. In fact there's hardly any shedding now, with Bailey or even little Chloe.
I suggest you get an undercoat rake and get all the loose out. But don't use it aggressively, only moderately.
As far as shed control shampoo, I don't know what is in it......I have never used it and probably wouldn't on my dogs, but that's just my opinion. If a dog is shedding when it's not supposed to be I would make a trip to the vet. I don't know about Sheltie's but none of mine have ever shed like that at this time of year and you all have about the same weather as we do here.

Ruckus is a bit over six months now. This is twice here recently when he has been shedding like this. if i rub him no fur comes out, but where he has been laying are fur balls!
if it keeps on i will call the vet. I know a few of the collies at work are shedding also, so i am not worried about something being wrong with him. Ruckus's coat is getting very heavy.. its not like its thinning at all.
thanks for the help :)

oh yeah, i have a rake ;)
i also have a pin brush, a slicker, a soft plastic bristle brush, and a comb.
so the rake would work best for this? or shoud i line brush him with the pin brush like usual.
**line brush- part the hair and brush from the skin getting all of the dead hair out. brush the hair over and repeat. doing this every eight of a inch or so. brushing against the grain of course ***

LOL, yes I know what line brushing is :) I don't particularly like to do it, but it needs done.
I would go ahead and use the rake and line brush him with the pin, that should get it all then you will be able to tell if the shedding is worse than it should be in a few days. I don't hardly use the slicker this time of year though.

I know what you mean. Nikki is shedding right now. She and Trey seem to have it figured out where they don't have their big sheds at the same time. So we usually have one or the other one shedding at one time. I think they have it planned. ;)
