she has three scraps and one that i didn't see went straight tru..it is so hard to tell on a black dog. I see that there is some thickening today. I hope it is not forming a hematoma, so far it is only half again as thick as normal so i pray this just some swelling. I found a puncture further down in her neck as well. Surely if it as going to fill with blood it would be bigger by now wouldn't it? Her ears are pointer soft, not like a labs, but more like a piece of velvet. she sure was a brave dog...a hematoma would leave scar tissue that would thicken her ear up..and i don't want that. Anybody else had a dog bite on their dog's ear? Mary had never been in a fight before, in fact none of my dogs has ever fought another. We had a bad couple at the kennels but that ws so long ago i can't remember how long a hematoma takes to develop.

Have no idea, Carey was bit by neighbor's dog (in our yard  ) I just wanted to say I hope she's ok. I took Carey to the vet and he gave us some antibiotics, hers was on her side.

I do hope she'll be OK. Did you check with the vet? A hematoma would probably be more likely to form in the case of a hard bruising or smack. It could be fluid in there or just plain swelling. Let's hope it's not infected. A-r-g-g-g....these dogs. They're like our children, always hurting themselves and worrying us into a nervous wreck! Let us know how it develops. Best wishes.

labradors and dogs with similar ears are prone to hematomas..they often get them when they have yeast in there and kick at the ear until the cartiledge seperates and fills with blood. they use to treat them by putting in many steel stitches to hold the layers together..those steel stitches were not comfortable for anyone, and expensive to boot. This man said he would pay the vet bill, but since it happend yesterday afternoon (in my yard too) the clinic was already closed and today is sunday. I will take her tomorrow if i think she is getting worse. I just can't remember if a hematoma comes on fast or slow.

Shiva and Kharma have both given themselves hematomas, but they were small and went back down in about a week with no intervention. That may just be a Fila trait, though, from the harsh and unforgiving life that shaped the breed.

Clean it out with the old peroxide and soak it well with Betadine and keep your fingers crossed . . .

I agree...keep it clean and x your fingers..!!! My old golden had a hematoma that the vet just drained . ElinHunter had a BAD case.....I'll have her report.

it isn't getting any bigger so i hope that is it. I have seen them stretched until the hair is standing up and the skin beneath is shiny and translucent. I have seen cats with a croupled ear and known just how they got that way. Poor Dear ol Mary...i tell her she was a big black woman that could push that ol onyx all the way to the curb..wish you could see her when she was finished with all that. No one messing with her yard and that was that. Her first and will be last fight. She can go to the dog park and play with every dog there, this was not her, it was onyx, she was merely defending herself and protecting Victor at the same time. She didn't deserve that, and i don't know what i am to do...call the pound next time i see onyx out..if i do, that will be the end of onyx...make my dogs live inside and never get to enjoy their yard in the evenings..the best part of their day? i don't want to be forced to make that kind of decision and it is making me very uncomfortable. I can't risk it happening again..next time could be worse, she could lose an eye..omg i hate this.

I hope Mary's ear gets better. Last year CJ had the same thing, but it got worse. She had to be operated on. They used the plastic type of thread, not steel. She's okay now, but don't want to go through that again, especially after spending $650 for the operation. I think I spend more on vet bills than my own doctor bills sometimes.

How's Mary's ear today? My previous lab, Yogi, gave himself a big huge hematoma. The actually stitched a flap that looked like the bottom of a shoe to the outside of his ear... stitched clear through the ear, poor baby! It did leave him with scars. But, I guess that's better than Rufus, our golden when I was growing up. The vet just drained it and the poor baby ended up with a crumpled up cauliflower ear for the rest of his life!

her ear seems to be holding and looks a bit better today. Glad they got away from thos metal stitches..the ends of those things were so sharp that when the dog brushed against you it was like being scraped by an ear full of needles.
