As you all have heard we rescued a female husky a few days ago. Today we took her out and noticed bleeding from the back end (not a lot but enough to stain my stepson's shorts pretty good). She probably isn't spayed (or so the vet says). What we were wondering is if she is in heat how long does a dog's heat last? Is it bad to spay her while she is in heat (I have an appointment for Tuesday)? How can we tell for sure if she is or not (in heat). Our male dog, who also has an upcoming appointment for his neuter doesn't seem to interested in her (if you know what I mean). If you could help me it would be much appreciated.

He wouldn't show interest at this early stage....watch them VERY carefully until tuesday !!! The vet will fill you in on everything. The average heat is about 3 weeks.

Sorry, false alarm. It wasn't the female ( :o ). It was our male dog. He has a thing on his foot and he broke it open somehow and that's where all the blood was coming from. We found it out late last night. Mack jumped up on the bed and kept tracking blood all over when we looked at him we noticed that the thing had cut open. So now he has to go to the vet to have it looked at and removed because this is the third time this week that thing has cut open.

What a relief, but I hope you're male dog's cut will heal soon. Let us know how he is.

Well our boy, Mack, is doing ok. The lump on his foot will have to be surgically removed though. It keeps breaking open, so we took him to the vet today. We just switched vets because we didn't like our old vet. He didn't really seem all to interested in the healing part of the deal (just the collecting money part). The new vet right away said yeah that it should be removed and sent away to be tested. This new vet is SO much better. He has even offered to let us make payments on the surgery, and the neuter and spay that we have to do too.
