Am I just too concious about it?

My Min Pin puppy is now almost 11 weeks old. I have had her for 3 weeks. Am I assuming too much of her at this time? It seems to me that she wants out to go at least every 30 minutes if she is not sleeping.

I am wearing down running in and out so much. The funny thing is she picked it up really fast, and she barks to go out. Then she really does go that often.

She still wants out twice during the night too.

What are your thoughts?

Puppy raising can be not so fun sometimes. In 6 months you will have forgotten all about this stage.

^^^echo what Redyre said. Small breeds tend to be difficult to housebreak. It is outstanding that you have a young pup that is already asking to go out.

Well I do have very good training experience, my best friend trains for the handicapped and blind dogs, and I have had a lot of training "training" if you will.

I just think she goes out an awful lot. Do most pups go out this often at this age, and should she still be wanting out in the middle of the night twice?

I have had other puppies years back, but I cannot remember them wanting to go this often.

She is very intelligent, she caught on almost immediately. She has had 2 accidents the first day we got her, and none in the past 3 weeks.

11 weeks is still pretty young, and it sounds like she is doing really good with letting you know when she needs to go outside. Is she free-fed? Giving her limited feeding times will help set up a schedule for her much better. My puppy, who isn't a small breed, didn't sleep through the night until he was about 12-14 weeks. Have you tried with-holding water a couple hours before bedtime?

That's great that she's asking you to take her outside and not having very many accidents. I got Wrigley at 10 weeks and he was 4 lbs--he only went out once at night the first few nights we had him but then held it the whole night after that (then again though my husband and I have very different schedules--so he would go out for last potty at 11pm and my husband generally gets up for work around 3-4am so that isn't very long). For a regular 8 hour night I would think that she probably would need to go out at least once.

Echo the free feeding comment - does she have set meal times?

I wouldn't like to withhold water from the puppy, but perhaps put ice cubes down instead an hour before bedtime?

What is the routine when you go out? Do you let her out on a leash? Does she have play time after she goes to the toilet?

To be honest, it's great she is going out - and you don't want to set that back!!!!

Yes she is on a feeding schedule. The latest she eats at night is 5:30 or 6:00. No water after 7.

It still seems excessive to me to have to get up at least 2 times a night. She really goes often during the day, like I said 30-60 mins.

She has lots of play time, since we started her with a crate then because she has been doing so well, we have not kept her contained in a crate the past 2 weeks. She just says when she wants to go.

It is the frequentcy that I am curious about at 11 weeks.

Roush did the same thing, when he was that age , he'll be 7 months on thursday. He asked to go outside too, he would walk over to the door and hit it his leash with his nose...I leave his leash wrapped around the door. He was going outside so often and peeing every single time. I actually started to get concerned that something was wrong. Within the last two months, though, he has cut way back on it, I also started to make him wait a few extra minutes before I let him out, so he slowly learned to "hold it". He went in the house a few times but he seemed to get it rather quickly. Good Luck!

Sounds pretty normal to me.

I think you have done an awsome job teaching her to let you know when she needs to go, especially at such a young age. I must look into training my 8 month this, he has a doggy door but occasionly we have forgotten to open the screen door.

That's absolutely normal. I always suggest to people with puppies to take them out at LEAST every 30 minutes. They have tiny bladders, ESPECIALLY the small breeds.

You should be taking her out at least twice a night.

You're doing ALL the right things. Keep up the good work!

Also, people would KILL to have a puppy that young TELL you when they want to go out! Congrats!

I just wondered about the play, whether she uses going outside to pee as an excuse to go out pee and PLAY!!

No, she wants to go out and come back in, usually she goes and runs right back to the door even on leash. She does like to go for walks though.

It has been really cold since we got her, so that has helped not wanting to play outside.

She's a smart one for sure.

:) My bulldog puppy is 5 months and she just recently stopped asking every half hour. She's good for 1-2 hours now before she stands at the door. I think it's great your pup is asking. Be thankful.

my puppies caught on quickly because they asked to go out lots too. theyr'e 6 months old now and stay outside. can you help me with some serious behavoir problems like their love to tear up everything and barking 24/7

She is so attached to us that she does not want to play outside at night. She goes out, does her job and runs back to the door.

I am just worn out getting up 2-4 times in a night.

Wow, I REALLY wish my girls would do that. If you have any advice for me please PM me! :) My girls are 6, 7, and 8 months. It sounds normal. We just got our 6 month old today, and we took her out every hour, but she only went a few times, but she's used to being in a crate 10+ hours a day. (this is why the owner had to find a new home for her--we're home 24hrs a day) So she can hold it. My other girls are potty pad trained, so they go when they want, and will not hold it...but I'm afraid to take the pads up, in fear that they'll mess all over the house....
