alot has been mentioned regarding diet and 'doggie odor'. I can tell you that my dogs no longer have odor having changed their food quite awhile ago. the only time they smell is when they've decided to wallow in something horrid...never appreciated. lol or perhaps something medical going on...skin problems?? I don't even bathe mine that much. they get brushed daily, but bathing happens just a couple times a year.

I would first look at what you're feeding her, then rule out any sort of medical skin issues and then go get a bottle of MangoTango shampoo or FurBreeze freshener.

I agree with Zoom. A healthy dog should never reek unless they have been where they s houldn't be. My tiny toy poodle is 3 pounds, groomed weekly, and will roll in the nastiest thing she can find.

I have to agree. Doggy odor is mainly from diet. What are you feeding? You may also want to consider using and antibacterial shampoo and see if that helps or rule out a yeast skin infection...

This may sound silly, but how old is your dog? I've noticed that my dogs had a noticably stronger doggy odor during adolescence. It went away as they matured.

We feed Honey and Oscar "Pedigree Adult: Complete Nutrition --- Small Crunchy Bites" and we feed Princess (who doesn't smell at all but sheds all over the place no matter how much we brush her) Kibbles and Bits. Honey, Oscar, and Princess are bathed in "Premium Deodorizing Shampoo" and "Hartz 2 in 1 Flea Rid". I groom her with a brush every day.

I would try a better quality food for all your pets.

it will probably help with the odor and the shedding problems you are encountering.

I agree you would find good results all around with better food. Both Pedigree and Kibbles and Bits are very low quality.

ITA with the others. Doggy odor most often is caused by poor diet- sometimes it's from rotting teeth. Every dog we've brought in through rescue stunk even after a bath. Once they are on high end food for a few weeks to a month, it goes away. Pedigree is REEEEAAALLY low end food.

I'm feeding canidae and Innova EVO...

Might be a ways off, but could it be from all the moisture?

She sleeps outside and i live near the beach. Everything gets SOAKED at night due to condensation. could it be that she's getting really moist at night and causing this smell?

Yes. It's a yeast infection. Take your dog to the vet to get examined

try a food that has salmon in it like wainwrights that is very good food and salmon helps the skin you can also perfume that helps disguise the smell check your dog has not got any skin conditions before using any perfume also check your dogs anal gland does not need doing as it leaks a little and it stinks

I noticed that I am having the same problems with Holly. She is on canidae chicken meal and rice kibble and she smells totally of dog. Mark noticed that the car smells really bad whenever she goes in the car with us and it's starting to linger in the car for awhile. I bath her with the earthbath shampoo and she is brushed daily. I should probably bring this up with the vet about her smell but I never really noticed it (mainly because my allergies make it impossible for me to smell her).

My guess is it's the food. That's a very low quality food and you can get a bigger bang for your buck if you steer clear of grocery store brands. I know I can tell the difference between a dog that is on good food and one that isn't.

Definitely switch to a better food.

Julie, we feed Canidae All Life Stages and our dog doesn't really have his own smell. He just absorbs the smell of his surroundings. Usually good, sometimes really bad. :)

I hope it's not the surroundings or else our place smells really bad and we don't even know it:yikes: . She does smell a lot like dog though not really the surroundings just like a dog. She might still be adjusting to be on a better food though because I don't remember what the breeder fed but I don't think it was a high quality food, I should probably check and see because I know he wrote it down on her papers.

I have fed Canidae for a long time.
I have never, ever had a "doggie" smell and these are fairly large size dogs.
Their ears have never had an odor to them either and don't need cleaned as often. My groomer says that she can always tell if a dog isn't on a good food.........by the ears.:) I have a friend that has a 4lb Pom and he stinks up the WHOLE house with doggie smell. I also think that some dogs are just more prone to having an odor.

My Yorkie/Chi seems to smell about 4 hours after her bath. Trying to figure out what to do as well.

I am new to the forum, and maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I have had labs all my life, and in my opinion, they often smell "doggy." I think it has something to do with the oils their coats produce to keep them waterproof. Ours usually smell good for a few days to a week after a bath, and then they almost always get that doggy smell back. It's not really offensive...just smells like a dog. I'm sure there are other breeds who produce waterproofing oils who would tend to smell as well. If I'm thinking right, I've heard the Chesapeake Bay Retrievers have a characteristic smell to them, and they are very oily dogs. Again, I could be wrong, but it's a thought.

Neither our GSD nor our rough collie have doggie smell to them, and I have known my share of stinky GSD's. Our girls get brushed daily. Dakota (GSD) is bathed every other week to treat a skin allergy, not because she smells. Faith (collie) gets bathed about once a month. They sleep inside and are on Nutra Ultra Mix (not to be confused with Nutro, completely different company)

I think most odors can be controlled with grooming and feeding.

fresh and clean shampoo leaves a nice odor for two weeks and or you can also try baking soda shampoo or mix some in with your own shampoo it works too

Lizmo- She already responded, some Purina formula.

I'd definitely have to agree with the others, change the food first, perhaps even a trip to the vet's as well.

A friend complained to me about a smelly dog, they were feeding Iams. They switched to Innova and voila! No more smelly dog, well at least if he hadn't rolled in dead vermin, ate his own poop or anything else that smells nasty that dogs love to do ;) LOL

My fiancee's parents dogs smell awful. They are both golden retrievers. His parents feed Iams, and won't listen to us about switching their food =/

My chis eat Timberwolf Organics, and never smell like dog.

Honey_Bear? If so, She must have changed, they feed what ever they find at walmart. And the only reason I know is because I know her(in person).
