View Full Version : What would the ideal Golden retriever look like?
I know I've had a thread similar to this about Goldens but I thought I'd do it this way round to help me understand. I don't know anything about conformation really but I wondered if you could talke this pic of Casey and descrbe to me what she should look like to make her an ideal Golden (I know she isn't a show dog or anything but it's easier for me if you point out what Casey 'should' look like as it's so much easier to visualise). I know she looks big but her waist is fine she just seems to carry a lot of weight around her neck, chest, shoulders area. So heres the best side view of her I have, what should be changed about her to make her look 'better'. I don't want show dog and I know she is far from being one I just want to be able to visualise it in my head. I hope all this makes sense lol.

Or if any of you have any nice pics of a good looking Golden please share them :D.

To me this is the perfect representation of a Golden Retriever! granted I dont know much on the breed but he is an incredibly show dog and an incredible hunt dog so he has the look and the drive! One of the few goldens that actually make me stop and take a second look when i see him. He is owned by a friend of mine who owns Milbrose Kennels

To see more pics of him or her other stunning dogs (another Golden and a few Flat Coats - check out Shalva!!!) go here http://www.milbroseretrievers.com/conconformation2003.htm

I have to say that one the most beautiful Goldens I personally know is definitely Hoiker's A Round The Clock (Aaron). He is the top winning Slovenian Golden Retriever (his owner is one of the best Junior Handlers in this area :) ).......... isn't he adorable??

Casey's beautiful! You already know I think that though. :D
Chrissy&B, that dog is gorgeous, but isn't he or she a little too light in color? Or is it "acceptable" in the ring? Just not very common in the goldens I've seen.

He, he considering the fact that he's one of top Goldens in this part of Europe at the moment, I think he's just right :p ........ here's the description of FCI standard: Any shade of gold or cream, neither red nor mahogany. A few white hairs on chest only, permissible.
A few more Slovenian Goldens:Hoiker's American Express

And another :) ...... Sorry for so many pics, but I'm quite proud of our breedings. I think we have some nice dogs in my country and they are very succesful show dogs in Europe.

The ones being shown today are much lighter in color . I personally like what was the true Golden color.
Me too Grammy! They are not called goldens for nothing ;) :p.

Yeah, that's why I was surprised to see such a light golden. . .I'm used to them being Casey's color. I still think that all goldens are beautiful, though. :)

I have seen a few very nic elooking Goldens in the ring. I do however find that the breed has gotten very "long" in the body. They are a very rectangle looking breed to me.
Low to the ground, long bodies, straight coats.
What you COULD do, if you felt creative would be tidy up Caseys ears a bit. Do you have any thinning shears? Its amazing what a tidy ear can really do to the appearance of a dogs head.
If you have thinning shears and a straight metal comb. First, trim around the edges of her full ear, taking it to the leather of the ear(be careful lol). Then take your comb, comb backwards UP her ear and then take your thinning shears upward to the ear(holding it out) to the topside and cutt maybe 4 times down the ear to get rid of the exess hair on it.
Then brush upward again and take your thinners and trim downward on her ear to get rid of any loose run away fluffs.
Its amazing then change in the face.
you could also thin out the hair in her ear using the thinning shears, as well as behind her ear(helps to prevent tangles as well).
to "bulk thin" you take the thinners upward against the growth of the hair and do one quick snip close to the skin(make sure you can always feel the top of the scissors before cutting though) and then use your comb and comb out the fur thats been cut.
It really looks great. Notice the trimmed ears those show Goldens get.
Also, if you want to get rid of her curl, you can do the same and bulk thin where the curl is. Its amazing how well it works hehe

I like these two. Notice that they are not ALL the light color. There are plenty of Goldens being shown today that are actually gold!

Kase, I found this link a while ago about how to groom a Golden incase you're interested:
http://morningsagegoldens.freeservers.com/Grooming.html
I used that link as a reference a few years ago when I was learning how to trim Tango's ears (she's not a Golden, obviously, but the same technique is used). Casey is already a very pretty Golden, but I think trimming her up a bit would do a lot of her appearance aswell. :)

Showpug ... you got it !! The first looks like my my line ... the second more like my chip ... yes my line , but not of my female . Bubba in my avatar is more red than what he was . Same in the siggy . Chip ( beside me by the swing and Nash ) is truer in color . Folks , if you don't show , it's what's between the ears !! As a breeder I was aware the the darker goldens ( back in the 60s ) were of field breedings . I really had a mixture of all . I wasn't breeding for the ring .... to me the temperment and qualities were more important ( Though all could have been shown ! )

I'd love to trim my goldens' ears like that... I don't trust myself though. How often do you have the trim the ears? Say I tried, and messed up, how long for it to grow back??

Grammy, I bet your Golden's had it all! Believe it or not, a lot of show people care a lot about what's between the ears as well. We aren't just out there for beauty! I will be breeding my Alice next year after she finishes her championship and passes her health screens. I have already started my stud research and one of the boys that appeals to me so much does so because of his ideal, loving demeanor!
I wish you had more pics of your goldens. I would give anything to see them. :)
Ooh, I got to rifle through her scrapbooks when we were up there...her dogs were gorgeous! There is actually one that comes in to board, his name is Kody and he's got a bum leg from a puppyhood accident, but he reminds me a lot of how Grammy says Bubba was.

Hi Kase... I wanted to put in a plug for more attractive pictures of Goldens. Someone I used to worked with... Look up/Google Tonya Struble, RushHill Golden Retrievers. Very nice babies. Temperament, intellegence and like yours, very pretty Goldens.

I've noticed about half the pictures have high rears, with the other half being below even. Is it the posing, or does the standard not take a stand on it? I dont mind high rears (I'd love a Chessie) but it looks a little odd on a golden.
As for anything else, they seem to look a little low and stocky to me, not very conducive to finding that bird. Look at a Flat -Coat, maybe a notch or two in that direction for me.

uhmanda - I'd say maybe 6-10 weeks until it grew back ;) Depends on the age and breeding of your Golden though, but thats the usual for our clients.
Toller, Thanks for the link!! :) I really need to get better grooming skills.
Otch1, WOW!! I just googled her and my those dogs are stunning!! I know what I want for christmas lol :D.

I think Casey is adorable. :D
Riot, does that apply to all dogs? I trimmed Dixie's ears wrong, and I want it to grow back out, so I can try again....but it's been several weeks, and it looks like it's going to be a while 'til it's back how it was.
