My dog Rosco is a mix not sure what kind possible Lab and chow. Anyways he has been itching alot and he has a bad odor. His hair is falling out mostly on his back and around his tail. His skin on his belly is a dark gray to black in some areas. Also oily and skin is flaking. I would have taken him to the vet already but its a money issue! :( I think what I have to do is use up my vacation money to just take him and get answers I love my dogs like no other. Rosco has a brother He is a Great Dane. Im just curious if anyone has had a pet with this issue and what they had found out. Thanks in advance.
Sincerely, Tailwagger

Brady's girlfriend Jenny is a lab that he plays with down the street. She had an issue where her hair was falling out, she was itchy all of the time, and she had a red rash on her belly area. After a lot of money at the vet, they foudn out she was allergic to food with corn and corn meal in it. So , they had to switch her food, and now she is all better. So, it could posibly be a food allergy. Oh yeah, and she had a bad odor too but it was because she already had that rash from the food allergy and she is a very active dog and would go swimming at the creek and the lake alot and the bacteria in the water made her skin infected so they had to use an antibiotic from the vet several times to get rid of it. It may take only once with your dog though because it took them a while to figure out what it was.

Could be allergies, hot spots from the water of fleas, or with the oily skin and smell , mange. You HAVE to check it out ! It will only get worse and cost more money.

Skin problems are predominantly diet problems. Check out the Dog Food forum and read some of the threads that deal with allergies and feed there. Mordy can give you excellent advice on this subject as well. You'll find the majority of her posts in the Dog Food forum.
Bubbatd's absoluteley right about checking to eliminate the possibility of mange, too. Horrible stuff!
