Holly is a great puppy, we couldn't ask for better. I am getting her on a housebreaking schedule and she goes out every 45 minutes which works for her because she goes every time. The only problem that we do have with her is she's not concerned about sleeping in her potty. She was doing really good for the first couple nights with no accidents (saturday and sunday). Monday she pooped in her crate while we were sleeping, we figured maybe she was sick from worms or the food switch. Monday she made a fuss and I got her out and cleaned off right away. Well tuesday I woke up to the same thing, poop in her crate. Except this time she was just laying in it like it didn't bother her. Now wednesday the crate was clean but today I woke up and she had agian pooped and was laying in it. Agian this didn't seem to bother her. The nighttime is the only time she has an accident in the house since I have put her on her outside potty schedule and we can't figure out why. She is fed at 9 a.m. and then agian at 2 p.m. She goes outside every 45 minutes and has probably 3 bm's, her last one being at around 11 at night. She is let out though all the way up until 2 a.m. So she has plenty of opportunities to go poop she just won't. I run around out there when I take her out at 2 for 20-30 minutes and she still won't go. Our vet seems to think that maybe she was overcrated and got used to sleeping in her own pee and poop but I called the breeder and I asked them and they denied it and told me how they started on housebreaking (which is the exact same way they told me when I picked her up which is the way I am doing it). They said she was never made to lay in her own poop ever. I did apologize to them but I was just curious because what the vet had told me was exactly what I was thinking before I asked the vet about it. Also my vet said to keep on with the crate training, because I told him I was thinking about gating her off in the bathroom just so I won't have to bath her every morning. My vet said not too because there's too much room so she can just go whenever and whereever and she'll never learn bladder control, he said that eventually she will understand that her crate is not the place to potty if I just keep cleaning it out every morning and removing the smell (I use clorox clean up on the crate when she has an accident). Would gating her off in the bathroom help? I have decided to put her crate in the bedroom tonight so If I hear her start to stir I can get her outside right away, would this be a better idea than babygating. She's a great puppy otherwise she hasn't had an accident in the house for 2 days (besides at night in her crate). She doesn't tell me she has to go but after 45 minutes she'll come right outside and do her thing no playing around. I just remember all our dogs sleeping through the night with no accidents (beside Lily who we got at 3 months) at less than 3 months and with her being a large breed puppy I thought that she would definetely be sleeping all night after the first couple of days. Sorry it's a long post but this is just something that is driving me nuts. She goes to puppy class on monday so I'll bring it up there too.

Our Dob Zoe was like your pup. No matter how often we took her out: No matter what we did! As soon as we put her back into the crate she'd do her business.

She did this till she was 10 months old. Why? Not because we left her in it! Because this was her way of getting out attention. She would actually make sure that she went at the back of the crate and had the front part clean. If it was the uhm stuff. She, did not pee in her crate as much as the back door stuff.

So it could be a load of things that is going on with your new 4 legged kid.

It's not that she goes in her crate constantly it's only at night when we go to sleep. She has not had an accident inside (except for the few times the kids stopped her by the door while I was taking her out). Other than that she does not go potty in the house. Her crate is only big enough for her to turn around and lay down. She is not trustworthy yet so she is still attached to a 6 foot leash beside me for most of the day. I set the timer for 45 minutes and then take her out and she doesn't have accidents and she goes right away when I take her out without messing around too much. I do not usually play with her outside yet because I want her to associate the outdoors with potty and not play. The only time she is outside for awhile is when I am trying to get her to poop and I am running around with her. I have kept a schedule and so far she has got up and ate breakfast at 9 and then did not have a bm until 2 she then had her last meal at 2 and just now, at 5:30ish had another bm. So tonight we're gonna put her crate in our room and I will listen to see if she starts moving around and if she does Mark will take her out (she is his dog he gets up with her at night). We're just really tired of bathing her every morning and having to disinfect the crate. It's just strange that she does so good during the day and has no accidents and nighttime is the only time she has an accident.

Oh yeah and she did have a tapeworm and rabies shot on tuesday and also a hartguard pill which also takes care of roundworms and stuff. So there were some worms in her poop yesterday. It's also been slightly runny as well. She'll have one solid bm and the rest will be slightly watery. She is on the Innova all life stages formula and she is fed 2 cups a day (one in the morning and one in the afternoon) and she was previously on canidae at the breeder's, she is around 20 lbs. I did switch her cold turkey because we forgot the food at the breeders and didn't realize it until we had already gotten home from the breeders and the store. She has been on the Innova since saturday evening (so almost a week now). She doesn't get any rawhide (except for the occasional Nylabone healthy eatibles) and the only training treats that I use are pieces of her kibble and I only give her those for going potty outside (she she probably gets 10-15 pieces a day for going potty).

It sounds like that is your problem right there; She had worms and now with being treated she has an accident in her crate. What kind of doggie is she?

Does she have a soft bed or blanket in her crate? Does she mess on it?
If she does, take it out. If she doesn't have one, put a blanket in there.
It is really hard to tell what she is used to eliminating on, so just do the opposite of what you are doing. That might help some????

On the other hand since she did have worms, maybe she cannot hold it that long...... you know, when you gotta go, you gotta go. :)

Since her last feeding is at 2:00, I would think she has plenty of time to eliminate before bed. Just try different things.......and good luck.

Julie.

Sorry I missed that .... agree , that should be out of her system by bedtime ..... unless there are treats .

There are treats but only about 10-15 really small pieces of kibble as a treat for going outside. I'll try putting something in there for her to lay on but she usually eats towels. Right now I don't put anything in the crate because I heard they like soft stuff to potty on. I've sort of noticed that all bm's are usually about 4 hours apart so maybe I can sort of set my alarm to get Mark up to let her out. I'm hoping it's just the worms and maybe once they are all out of her system she'll stop having accidents in the crate. I don't think that the breeders were lying about having her crated all the time they seemed like really trustworthy people and really cared about the dogs. I didn't see any worms though today when she pooped so I guess that is a good thing.

Have you thought about discontinuing the Nylabones for a while, too? Our puppy definitely had some stool issues with those when we first got him.

Oh my god I didn't know they were bad! I guess I'll stick with bully sticks or something similar from now on. Hannah has no problem with them and Hannah has one of the most delicate stomachs in the world! I'll definetely stick to the bully sticks or the uneatible nylabones from now on!

Well her crate was ALL clean this morning! Mark got up and took her out at about a quarter to 6 and she peed and I got up at 9 and took her out and fed her. I'm so relieved I dreaded waking up to her and her crate covered in crap! It's nice when she gives us a break every so often!

Aww YAY Holly! :)

I'm glad that hes showing initiative and doing stuff with his puppy too - thats fabulous to see.. read.. lol

It could have just been worms.. I remember when Riot had them as a small puppy - it just couldn't keep it in.. no matter how often I took him for a potty.. thank goodness for carpet free floors lol

I honestly think it might have been the worms.. she was probably feeling a little bit tummy upset so didn't bother to move out of her poop...
I know that if I had to stay in a kennel for the night, and I wasn't feeling good.. I wouldn't be going out of my way to stay out of it lmao!

So glad to hear she had a good night and a clean crate.
