Well, I thought I would help some people out to help them decide if they want a family pet. So please no bashing. Ok, I have had two wonderful Golden Retrievers! The perfect pet. They are loyal, sweet, at your side pets, good hunting dogs, will never turn unless you abuse them, sweet as can be, and most of all, very much love. These dogs are not for people who do not want a long haired dog. They are great pets for people who want a lot of companionship though. These dogs are nothing but loyal to you. They are easly trainable. So if you are considering a pet, purebred, then go for the Golden Retriever. :) And remember, go to the Animal Shelter and check there to see if you find one you want. :D First. I was just suggesting a breed, in my opinion for first time pet owners, that is easy on you. :) Well, thank you for your time!

Yeah what on earth would you be bashed for? For your praise on a breed of dog?

??? I have no clue...

I've a clue ... There is quite a strong tendency around here sometimes for 'bashing' someone for having a particular view or even for asking a question...so some peeps might have become understandably a bit paranoid!!

Thanks, Spirit, for the suggestion. I love Goldens - those beautiful happy faces and nice temperaments (usually). They are a triumph of breeding.

Now if I were to suggest further crossing them with Poodles to fix some of that shedding problem...well, that would awaken some of the bash squad and bring them running. (KIDDING!! Stop right there... :D). Nope, you are safe Spirit, and good suggestion.

Del. :)

Goldens are lovely dogs. Like all breeds, they aren't for everyone, but it's hard to NOT like a Golden.

Thats okies Jess. :) I don't know what I would be bashed for, just its some people, not all. Because they would say how there are other dogs out there, and ya. (I've heard it before when I tried to post a post like this) My Sugar Booger that we recently had to put down.. Well, ignore the mats, her recent owners did not brush her.. http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c49/LuckyandHunter20105/Sugar.jpg I did fix her mats in the Summer though. She was gorgeous, and a great companion!

And it was pretty poor, that the owner did not tell us her real age, or that she had heartworms. She was put down because of kidney failure. :( She is better off now. :) I wish we would of had her longer than a year... thanks you two for your comments! :D

Aww, my dalmatian that I grew up with had renal failure as well... she was put to sleep at the age of 10.

Del, if by "bash squad" you mean "people that genuinely care about the health and welfare of dogs as a whole; people who do not support unethical, irresponsible breeding practices done for selfish reasons" then yeah, I'm a card carrying member!! :D

Well, what I mean is, when I tried to suggest a breed, someone said that this breed is better than that breed. I mean if people care about the dog's health, then fine. :) Cause I do too. :D (this is why I am annoying my mom to get the animals to the vet!) hehe. awesome Summitview! :D

Sprit ... having had Goldens for almost 60 years until last July .... I can say no more than a huge ECHO !! They fit the bill for us . Now my cur , Ollie , has all the Golden traits and looks except for his curly hair ( Chessie ? ) . But , there he was on Petfinder and he stole my heart ! Yes, some want a smaller dog ... a more majestic dog .... a more driven dog . But , to anyone who wants a true family dog from day one .... get a Golden . ( my new Golden Grand-dog should be whelped next week !!! Can't wait !)

awesome! You must keep me updated on the pups! :D Goldens are great dogs! Isis, our old golden has been gone for a year or two. She was the best mommy/family dog ever! :D (she had an unexpected mutt litter) But I hope her pups turned out to be like her. :) My grandma had to take the poor things to the animal shelter because she could not handle all four of them. She wanted to keep them all. But did not need that many dogs. Goldens make great family dogs. :) hehe.

Summit, I completely agree!

Spirit, my fiancee's parents have 2 goldens. They are the sweetest, most gentle dogs. They are great! They are really good family dogs, good suggestion on a breed for a family :D

I agree that Goldens are absolutely wonderful dogs and do make great family pets. That being said, they really aren't what I want in a dog and I'll probably never have one. I don't think one would fit into my life (or that of my family) at all. They are a good suggestion for people who have never had a dog before and want a great family dog though. :)

lol I must be trying really hard, because I don't like them. ;) :p I don't hate them though. Individually most dogs (regardless of breed) are wonderful and I adore them, but GRs really don't interest me as a breed. I'm more your molosser and sighthound type of person.
However, GRs are of course a perfect fit for so many other people. :D I certainly agree they are wonderful dogs for (active) families with kids.

To the OP...you shouldn't fear getting bashed for loving your breed. I'm pleased they hold such a special place in your heart. :)

Cass.

I would never have a golden either, they aren't for me :D They are very friendly, loving dogs though. There are a lot of great dogs out there that I would never want...

It tells more than what I told, wonderful with children, which is very true! :D
