if its on the inside, rub the insides with baby oil. If its on the outside I have no suggestions.

We do need a bit more information. Like TheMrs says, inside or outside the ear? How long has it been going on? What kind of dog do you have? How old is your dog? Have there been any changes in your dog's environment?

my dobie has scaley ears, both inside and outside. I use hydrocortizone on them once every other day, if I don't... he rips them open and it gets really nasty.

i recommend almond oil over anything else before taking any more drastic measures.

the itching might be caused by the food you are feeding. have you looked into that?

Microscopic parasites, fungus, or allergies could be a problem, also. I'd have my vet take a tissue sample before I did anything. I'd do it quick, though. Dogs with ear problems can really get into self-mutilation if the ears itch or are uncomfortable. Even after the problem is cleared up, the mutilation habits can be hard to break.

My girl was like that when she was about 3 months old...took her to the vet and did a srape test on the ears...no parasites and was given some medication. Do you feed flaxseed oil to your dog?

I gave my dog flaxseed oil in her diet during the medication and very soon after hat she was ok...with very nice ears.

All in all, bring your dog to the vet for a test at least, and you will feel more at ease too, knowing what is happening to your dog.

Thanks for the suggestions! I will put some of the stuff you guys reccomended and take him to the vet. Renne- He is a Hungarian Vizsla. It is scaly on the tips of his ears (outside). The dog environment is still fine. He is not acting weird the only thing hes doing is itching his ears.
Thanks everybody,

I had the same problem once and took my dog to a dermatologist . The first place he looked was at the tip of the ears and took scrapings....he had mange !!! I couldn't believe it ! We had been in Ontario and I found out later that they were having bad cases of mange and Bubba had caught it at a dog park. Shots etc took care of it.

What kid of dog is it?

He had bare spots from scratching...but for some reason they get better scrapings from the ears. He was a Golden Retriever. All the other dogs (in family) that had been in contact with him had to go on meds too..... Hope it isn't that !
