Hello...

What kinds of barks do the dog breeds you've owned (or know well) have?? I have devised a special scale... E.g. My old GSD was a 3-4 for Volume, 2 for Pitch and 2 for Frequency:

Volume:
5 - Very Loud: Can be heard in neighbouring countries
4 - Loud: Hands over ears required if standing nearby
3 - Mid-range: Certainly audible but not uncomfortable to stand next to
2 - Quiet: Civilised - "I'm going to bark now but you lot can keep talking"
1 - Barely audible: "I am Dog; hear me roar" (not).

Pitch:
5 - Soprano: Very high, piercing yap
4 - Alto: High and a little yappy, but not too piercing
3 - Tenor: Mid-range / neither high nor low
2 - Baritone: Mellow, deep
1 - Bass: Masculine, very deep

Frequency:
5 - All the *#$%^! time: If you're not going to shoot it, then please shoot me
4 - Too often: The neighbours are getting annoyed and so am I
3 - Fairly often: Doesn't need much of an excuse, but not too excessive
2 - Occasionally: Only when there's good reason, like visitors at the door
1 - Rarely (or never): "I am possibly another species disguised as a canine"

Thanks!!

Caza- Volume 3-4
Pitch 1
Frequency 1-2 (he's not a big barker, he's more of an observer)

Neeko- Volume 5
Pitch 2
Frequency 4 (he barks at every sound)

Hondo- Volume 3-4
Pitch 3-4 (he still has an akward bark, but its getting deeper)
Frequency- depends on whats happening. If I am doing a restrainted
recall and I am running and he is being held, he starts barking. And he barks when he hears the other dogs. Its more of a "monkey see, monkey do". He doesnt understand WHY they are barking just copies them.

Joe- Volume 4-5
Pitch 4-5

Okay.

Dixie (Yorkshire Terrier)

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a28/LaurenC4/HPIM1360.jpg

Volume: Between a 3 and a 4. It's moderately annoying (esspecially at night) but doesn't really require the hands over the ears. (But the occasional Pillow over the head doesn't hurt :D)

Pitch: Between a 3 & 4 again. She actually has a suprisingly deep voice for a Yorkie, but it's still a little Yappy, esspecially when she's Excited.

Frequency: 3 She barks for no apparent reason, but its not too annoying to be in the 4 catagory, but like I said, at night, I actually tell myself that I hate dogs (which I know I don't). So it's pretty bad. She is VERY protective of me, and if she hears ANYTHING she jumps up, and runs to my bedroom door, and starts barking(pretty ferociously). If someone opens my door, she barks and growls (showing her teeth) until she sees it's a family member, and then she starts wagging her tail (100 x a minute) (what a psyco) and starts bouncing up and down like a pogo stick. Also at night, I keep a night light on to read too, and I often fall asleep (book in my hands) and forget to turn it off (we live WAY out in the boonies, so its REALLY dark with no streetlights, etc.) so when the dogs are walking around on my bed, they'll see their own shadows on the wall and start barking...o_0 so I usually get really mad, and say "NO" and turn off the light. lol! (I'm really grumpy at night).

Overall, she's pretty barky, and I tend to get fairly upset with her barking. But who could stay mad at this face?

Not really..;) Sophie is a Labradoodle, Amos and Lola are Brussels Griffons and Tia and Tinker are Chihuahuas. Honesly, my "collection" happened pretty gradually and I find them to be no trouble at all....unless of course someone is sick or needing to rest post surgery, then they're like having 5 toddlers.:lol-sign:

Gunnar (male GSD)
Volume- 4- he literally shakes the floor when he uses his deep bark.
Pitch 1-2 unless in prey drive, then up to a 4 or even a 5
Frequency- 2

With him it really depends on the situation. His bark can go from very deep (warning/yard patrol) to very high (excited/prey drive)

Bruzer (male pug)
Volume 3, he's not too bad
Pitch 4 not yappy but higher pitched.
Frequency 3. He barks at everything but he's not overboard about it. You can get him to shut up.

Midnite (female GSD/Golden mix)
Volume 3
Pitch 4-5 yikes, she hurts your ears inside.
Frequency 3 she will bark and bark at stuff outside. Not so much indoors though which is good.

As Midnite has aged her bark has become very high pitched and piercing, but luckily it's not super loud. She barks a fair amount.

Gunner is a 2 on all accounts. He doesn't really bark so much as "woof". He only does it when 1. strangers are near or 2. he see's you coming and you've been gone awhile.

Tira is probably a 2 on all as well. Well, a 1 on frequency. She rarely barks unless she's very excited (people food coming, but coming to slow :) ).

Dodger: the 3lb male...thinks hes 300lbs, hes a 3, 4, 2
Vixie my 5 lb female is 3, 3, 1, she only barks if dodgers realy worked up and she thinks he has good reason, or shes yelling at charlie for getting too close to the puppies...

they have BIG and DEEP barks for such tiny dogs! and my chis are certainly not yappy, i had a frined come over and they thought vixie and dodger had to be much larger because of their big barks, she said she expected to see spaniels...

Roxy's CD
10-08-2006, 05:33 PM
Roxy:
Volume:5+ EXTREMELY LOUD- She has a loud howly type of bark, that she uses when people walking on the street aren't responding to her angry, sharp, blunt barks and continue to walk in front of our house

Pitch: 3 Is not very high, but it's loud, so it does kind of pierce your whole body. Her growls are very low, but also very loud, and can be felt through the floor all through your body.

Frequence: 5 ALL THE BEEPIN' TIME... I don't think you understand, I'll give you just a few examples of how it goes:

-squirrel/cat/leaf/skunk/racoon in the yard
-someone walks by IN HER VIEW (so 500yards down the road, in front of the house whatever, if she can SEE them, she barks)
-car goes by the house
-house creaks
-the wind blows, rain hits the roof, she hears a car door shut in Newfoundland.... AHHHH!

And, she is a "heart attack giver".

Definition- A dog that can be sleeping quietly by the fire, and out of nowhere goes into a frenzy of barking and growling. You believe someone is trying to break in and you have a heart attack. Therefore the term "heart attack giver". :)

Hades:
Volume 4-5: Depends, his howl is a 5+ which he uses if something startles him. His normal playful bark though is about a 4

Pitch 5+- The little devil has the most piercing bark.

Frequence- During play CONSTANTLY. THe darn dog thinks that play means bark incessantly. And the frequency during play combined with the pitch. KILL ME NOW!! Other than play, it's not to offen. If Roxy freaks him out with her constant barking he may huff and let out a small bark.

Peyton's a 3-4-2. only barks when playing mostly, but at four months i'm not sure that he's completely come into his bark yet. Although, we've discovered that even though he's half beagle, he's all terrier bark and no beagle howl!

Well my males have deep barks Coz - Teddy - Bear & Tank
Bear does not like to be confined so he will whine bark.

I dont get up unless a male is barking .

Females well they dont SHUT up .
The females also talk to you for fun.
But they bark more at nite more alert than males.
And I have one screamer...

Here is a audio of my old girl Tasha you barely here the males once i tell them who is here the girls are going nuts this is also how i cue them to know friend is going to come in.

#1 reason NOT to own a Central Asian Shepherd is the nite noise .
I use air cleaners and fans to lower it a few tones for the females the males are just much easier on the ears...
