You would be best to put this in the grooming forum, or look on a grooming forum I would have thought!
Have you made sure you are using a dye which is dog-friendly, and won't cause any irritation to your dogs skin??

Well, if I was you, I wouldn't just take their word for it :D
Better to be safe than sorry.
You'd probably be best off going to a professional groomer for advice.
Can you imagine if you did it and something went horribly wrong?! EEK!!
Just walk in and ask, I'm sure they'd be happy to advise you, and it's FREE!

I've never personally dyed my dogs hair (or even my own), but I heard that the jazzing dye is very very low quality, that it is very runny and dyes the hair in unattractive patches.
If your a groomer, don't you know other groomers that would give you good professional advice? It'd be great if they could show you, because I bet that'd be easier than trying to decipher text on the computer screen.
There is another member on here that uses chalks... I bet you could do a search, or PM her ;) :)

Yeah the chalks sound good.
Surely there must be a parlour in your area that would be willing to give free advice?

I've tried chalk, cool-aid and food coloring...none of them worked. They all rubbed off.........on my clothes LOL

I have had two poodles, one right now... and I would never ever think of dyeing them, lol... just wanted you to know that not all poodle owners make their dogs look like circus animals.

To each his (or her) own, but I'm firmly in the non-dyed poodle camp!
I take enough ribbing about having a "foo-foo" dog as it is! lol!
Not all poodles are girly-dogs!

If you're a professional groomer, wouldn't you know all of this? hehe.
Try googling it, you will probably get some good directions. Otherwise, I did dye the white on Gonzo hot pink once and blue once, but that was with temporary hair dye... once I did it with semi-permenant for sensitive skin, as my groomer recommended that. It only last for like 1 week, though, because of his water-resistant coat. =P I basically just rubbed it into the white areas, allowed it to sit for the recommended time, and rinsed really well with water. He had to stand still for 20 mins, which was probably the most difficult part!

I wish Charlie wasn't so dark so I could dye him...his coat is perfect for that stuff...don't mean to hijack the thread, but do you think any colors would show up on him if I tried it??

I dyed my dog for halloween last year so he could be Piglet. This year he is being dyed as Yoda. I used regular spray on human hair dye, being very careful and not using any on his head. The vet said it would be fine as long as I didn't let him lick himself or inhale the fumes. It was very fun, but he dye was messy all over the car on the way to the contest.

The OP posted this on a different pet message board too . . . She said she was going to use human hair dye. Her poodles are black so I don't think dye would show up anyway.

Yup...I saw that when I was doing a search on dyeing your dogs. Seeing how she uses human dye AND has black dogs, I am seriously doubting that she's a groomer. :p
I think the comments they gave her were very harsh though, it's not like dyeing your dog will damage their skin as long as you use something mild like kool-aid or food coloring or something. It's not like their doggy self-esteem isn't going to go down either. Dyeing a dog (with the right stuff) is perfectly fine.

Yeah, I don't think dying itself is bad. I know someone who dyed their American Eskimo Dog a pattern of pink and green. (Well, actually her HUSBAND had it dyed while she was out of town . . . what a surprise to come home to. :D ) But that was pet-safe dye done by a groomer. I wouldn't use Clairol or anything.

No, I have a black poodle but the one I am dyeing is NOT black. Do u know how much time and work is involved to get a black dog ready to dye? I guess not. and yes I am a groomer. We don't dye dog's at are shop. So I never learned how.

I would just like to know why you want to dye your dog in the first place?
Also, why not ask another groomer about dog friendly dye?

I wish that I had an answer for you. I have died my poodle's tail and ears before, and have made stars on her for July 4th. For one I used chalk, the other I used blo pens (like stenciling). I know that there are dyes made specifically for dogs, so if I was you, I'd stick with those, just to be safe.
I have to say, you've been given a very hard time on this topic. I'm not sure why everyone thinks that because you're a groomer you would know everything there is to know about dyeing a dog. It's not something that standardly done to clients dogs so, unless there's a special interest why would you know? They don't realize that there's alot in grooming, and that there is so much to learn. Its not just cutting hair.
Have you seen some of the creative grooming competitions that groomers enter? They're incredible.
As far as why you would want to dye your dog. That's your business. In my opinion, its no different than putting a bandana, a fancy collar, or a dress on your dog. Products are meant to be safe, and just like doing a different hair cut, you want to be individual.
When you do it, I would love to see the pictures! Here's one I did of my poodle (stars)

Thank you so muck. for saying that.. yes they don't teach you that in the grooming world. not in less you go to a special school i guess fro that .. and it's even harder if you learned it by another groomer not by going to a school and that's what i did and. and NO he doe's not dye dogs and when i asked him he new a little but nothing really. so i thank you so so so much for saying that.

You may want to go to www.groomers.net or www.petgroomers.com. Someone on those websites would be able to answer your questions about dying. They are actually very helpful, professional people who are more than willing to help instead of degrade. If you go there, you'll be happy you did.

Have you ever been to a "creative grooming" competition?
http://www.petgroomer.com/creative.htm
Amazing work!!!
Most dogs don't seem to mind, and I've heard that the majority of the dogs will fall asleep or doze off on the table. The dyes (or should I say the RIGHT dyes) don't damage the coat or hurt the dog, and even though I wouldn't do it to my dogs, I don't see the problem or why anyone would care.

What did you end up using? I dye my mom's shih tzu Emily at easter time with food colouring when we dye the eggs.
It stays in for about a week and a walk, and just fades away or comes out in the snow/rain we have here in Canada around Easter time.
That looks great! :) What did you end up using?
By the way...you should dye her ears purple. :D

She looks like a fluffly ball of cotton candy. :) Very cute. I like that the ears aren't done. It attracts the eyes to the rest of the body. What'd you use?

The jazzling its non toxin it did not hurt him I even got it all over me did not hurt. Had no smell its like food coloring. He did not like sitting in the cage for 30 min but that's it. Next time I will cut him before I dye him it was kind of hard to cut after he was dyed. I plan on dying him again but no to often.

Yeah, I agree. If you use the proper dyes there is no harm done. Its not like the dog cares. Its no different than getting groomed...except they come out a different color. I say yay for doggy dye!!!!

its cute, i like the way (intentional or not) the coluor fades on the ears and legs, it looks kinda natural...if purple/blue was a natural colour for dogs...
Would i ever dye my own dog? well i dont own a white dog right now, i did dye my old dane all sorts of colours with Koolaid but i was i started doing it and it was fun to go to the childrens hospital with him all in fun colours...never botherd him and the kids loved it...once he stoped "workin" i stoped dying him cause he didnt get out much (a 10 yr old dane doesnt want to see the world just enjoy the couch!) if i got another harl and we do therapy for kids programs again mabe I will...
In kings eyes he didnt care what colour he was so long as he got those children smiling!
In my opinion, if it doesnt hurt the dog and the dog doesnt seem to mind (ie the dog enjoys the attention its gonna be getting) then why not?!

Hi,
Your question caught my eye.
We have dyed white poodles in varying colors using Kool Aid.
Mix it with no sugar added and let your dog sit for a few minutes
for the color take and then rinse.
Doesn't harm the skin either and the dog will special like the
Kool Aid flavor.
Good luck
Janis:)

Hi,
I am a prof. groomer and have clients I dye their dogs for. I use "Manic Panic". The color does not tend to last too long, but have not found anything else at this point. I had attended a creative grooming seminar taught by a groomer in Manhattan that would dye and fancy up dogs for models to use on the run ways. I had called the company before I used and they told me it was pet safe. Just be careful of the eyes of course. I however prefer not to dye the facial area.
Post some pics!
