I read somewhere that rolling in smelling things is an instinct that goes back to when they used to hunt for food; supposedly the smelly things conceal their scent from the prey. Don't know if this is true now though, sometimes they seem to do it because its fun! :D

ahhaha thats funny! my dog's never done that before, but it does sound like a lot of fun for a dog, especially if they don't mind the smell/mess.
Just like kids playing in mud!
They want to bring it home with them like an olfactory photo album?

I saw somewhere that they rolled in dead animals because it dates back to wolfs, when they go back to their pack it will show the pack that they got a kill, or make them think that.

Maybe they just think it smells nice? Thank god Meg stays away from poop - otherwise she'd need a bath every day. Since she's in the barn all day, I think the novelty is just worn off.
Nead rotting animals, however, never lose their appeal:rolleyes:

Mink doesn't roll in poop, he just tries to eat it :yikes: . Thank god we have mostly managed to break him of that. The compost pile on the other hand? Hello Stinky Minky!

They want to scent of the other animals on them. My dogs roll in horse manure and sheep dung :( yes and they will eat horse manure and trimmings from the horses feet as well.
It is like marking territory.

I have to say I agree with these. I've obseved one of my dogs roll in something I wouldn't approve of, and then go back home and let the other dogs sniff them excitedly on multiple occasions. It gets the whole 'pack' excited and wanting to go outside. If they're all together with me (on a hike for example) no one rolls in something stinky... ever...
