View Full Version : Overly excited around other dogs

My puppy gets really excited when he chances upon other dogs on our walks. He is very submissive and rolls on his back which is good, but after that he gets up and gets in the other dogs faces and gets way too excited. I have a really hard time holding him back, he just pulls harder and makes wheazy breathing noises because he can't breathe. Someone recommended putting a choke chain on him to teach him to back off the collar. Is there any other method that I could use other than that? I haven't had the nerve to try it yet.

How old? What breed?
Have you tried using a treat to lure him next to you and having him sit? Once you get him to sit, keep his attention on you so that he isn't as distracted by the other dog. I know--easier said than done, but try getting between your dog and the other dog so that you have control of the situation.
Depending on how old he is, I would possibly just let him be all crazy puppy-like to those other dogs, provided they haven't already shown any aggression to him. Puppies get special treatment from most dogs, but there is a line to be crossed and sometimes a true canine correction is needed and goes a longer way to instilling the lesson that "in your face" is not always good.
I've just spent the last couple of weeks watching Sawyer teach proper manners to my friend's puppy; it's quite interesting.

has he been de-sexed? Dogs can become less agressive/excited once they're de-sexed.

I am having this same problem with my dog. We think she is about 2 years old. What I've been doing is telling her to "SIT" and "STAY" in the midst of other dogs, which she is getting better with. However, whether or not this is having any conditioning impact, I am not sure. I would like to get to the point where she can pass other dogs without immediately wanting to run to them and become aquainted. She isn't aggressive, which is great, but curious. She is possibly just coming out of puppyhood so I'm not sure what exactly my approach should be.

We tell our dog "let's go" and he knows that means its time to walk, not play. Does your dog know a command like that?
