hi everyone, can you guys tell me what type of puppy this is and how big will she get once she is fully grown. also, she is about 3 weeks old, and she is not living with her mom, what kind of food can i feed her? can i feed her the regular cow milk that we drink?

thank you in advance.

No.....cow's milk will not do!!
If the mother is not available, you could give puppy replacement formula. Esbilac (sp) I have found to be the best for orphaned squirrels if that means anything. You could also feed softened dry dog food a few times a day, and even a little canned food. But the majority of feedings should consist of puppy replacement formula. And slowly introduce more solid feedings as the pup matures.

Could you please tell me why you have that little pup at 3 weeks old?

As for breed it is hard to tell at such a young age, but if pup is only 3 weeks old, I would say a larger breed dog.

the mama passed away, so then there were 5 puppies left and i took one. i was hoping that she was going to be a smaller breed like my other 11 mo. old pup (beagle/pekingese). and thank you for responding so quickly.

Why would the breeder be giving away puppies at 3 weeks? In my state, it is against the law to sell puppies under 8 weeks without notice from a Vet. :/

Have you taken this puppy to the Vet? If not, do so right away! They will provide you with proper mother's milk replacement and guide you on weaning. She will also need to be de-wormed and checked to be sure she's healthy every 2 weeks from now until she is 8-12 weeks old.

Awww, she is sweet! However, if at all possible, even though her mother has passed, it would have been much, much better if she had been able to stay with her littermates until she was at least 8 wks old. Is there any possibility that she can be brought back and stay with them until they are all older?

If not possible, I also agree you should bring her to the vet and seek his advice.

She looks like shes going to be big, but take her to the vet, the vet will probably give u more info on size and feeding instructions. SHES a CUTIE!

You all know, and as this seems........It is a ...what done is done!
Now we should try to help the op so that this little pup will get the best start available to her under the circumstances.

Yes the pup should see a vet, but lets also help inform the op what he/she can do until then.

Get some Esbilac puppy replacement formula and feed that, no milk like people drink. Buy some good puppy food and moisten it with water or the formula, maybe even a little canned food. Start with several very small meals per day.

A very safe dewormer that is available over the counter has the active ingredient "pyrantel pamoate" just follow the directions for the puppies weight and it should be given approx every two weeks, until the pup is about 12-14 weeks old. First shots should be started at about 7-8 weeks depending on your vets reccomendations.

A puppy this young will not be learning the neccesary social skills from its mother or littermates. Such as bite inhibition and honoring another animals food. Don't be surprised if your pup has "social problems" later in life.

Please get vet checks, regular dewormings while young, and feed the right foods....... there is a wealth of other info in this forum that could help you as well.

Good Luck with your pup and I hope you continue to ask questions to help you along your way......

Best wishes.

I don't fault you , I fault the owner of the litter. All pups should have stayed together until at least 7 weeks old. As mentioned , vet and supplement , Get a good Puppy Raising Book too !!! Will tell you what the breeder should have done. !

thank you all for your help, first thing i'll do tomorrow is going to petco and buy the pup Esbilac Milk Replacement, and probably on sunday take her to see a vet for deworming. oh, i was wondering if i could feed her Eagle Pack all life stages (fish, i think) that my 11 mo. old pup is currentlly eating?

IW.........this puppy looks so much like Binn :)

It is sad that her mother passed away :( and i think that you are great doing what you can for this puppy!
I have never been in your situation, so therefore wouldn't have a clue what to advise.
Is there no way that maybe she can be placed with a Surrogate mother and her litter until she is 8 weeks? If she could that would provide her with all the Social Skills she will need for later in life.

She is a lovely puppy and i wish you all the luck with her :)

She is such a precious pup. You have your work cut out for you in the coming weeks/months. I wish you the best.

As for the breed, it does look like the irish wolfhound posted. I think it also looks like the puggles I have seen, but if she is in fact 3 weeks, probably too big. Her facial features remind me a lot of the puggles.

lol, she does look very much like the 3 weeks Irish Wolfhound, right now she is about 4 lbs light. as for her social skills with other dogs, i don't think it's going to be a problem b/c i have another pup that is 11 mo. old, so they play with each other all the times. i am hoping that she's going to be around 30 lbs or less when fully grown or else i might have to give her up which i really don't want to. and thank you all for your helpful advice.:)

I just checked my yellow labs puppy book, at 3 weeks she weighed 4 lbs 10 oz. Her adult weight is about 65 lbs. That might not mean anything though, as dogs grow at different rates and times.

You surely must know what Breed the mother was?
If you don't mind me asking, how did the Mother die and how did you come to have the puppy with you?

=trigger1 is it irish wolfhound?

I highly doubt you have an Irish Wolfhound. Im saying this because I have an Irish Wolfhound. Binn in my siggie is an IW. Wolfhounds are anywhere from $1500 to $3000 dollars in price.. even backyard breeders know this and would'nt just give away a pup at 3wks.. too much money is involved and at stake, so most likely they would hand raise the pup till 12 wks and then find it a new home. Also, IW's are born weighing 8 pounds, so by 3 wks their at least 12 pounds or so.

Even though it looks very much like an IW pup.. I dont believe you have one.

I highly doubt a IW would have eight pound puppies at birth. ;)
I would think more like 2 lbs. max.

Personally I think the pup looks like a German Shepherd/Lab mix. Gunner @ 11 wks was 26 lbs. I believe Tira was about 19 lbs @ 10 wks.
I'd say, full grown, you might be looking at a 50+ lb dog. But, without knowing for sure what breed it is there is no real way to tell.

Definitely get the puppy formula and go to the vet. Make sure the pup is dewormed and explain the situation to the vet. They'll set you up on a vaccination schedule and give info on raising puppies.

What breed was the mother and father? How did the mother die? Why didn't the breeder keep all the pups together? Was this an accidental breeding and the person wasn't a "real" breeder? Just curious...it may help to answer your own questions to know the answers as well.:)

The puppy's mother died after running into the streets and getting hit by a car.... I was driving and saw a sign for free puppies so i just stop in to ask for one. I ask what kind of puppies they but the owner did not know themselves....so that's how i got it...

The owner of the mother didn't know what breed they were? Geez, that's irresponsible on so many levels. Didn't she at least know what breed her own dog was or who the father was?
It sounds like he's not a "breed" at all. Sounds like ya got yerself a heinz 57 (or at least 50/50) :) LOL

i will try to go back to the owner and ask them if they have a picture of the mother. and i will post it on here

Unless you got the puppies from in front of the owners home you probably won't be able to find the owner again. This person had a box of 3 week old puppies from her own dog and didn't want to keep them and care for them til they were old enough. *sigh* Their fault though...and it's sad. :(

I hope you can find out what the mother was AND post a picture. :)

I think you've got a medium-large brown dog. Considering the situation, I agree she's probably a bona fide mutt! Cute little dog though!;)
