Ok, I walk away to take care of family, come back and my thread is locked! Nothing to do with my original questions, no answers , just arguments. Lets just hope this stays on track.
9:54 PM - temp tonight was 100.3, so we had the drop yesterday morning when it went to 98.6. Her belly is hard, pups are moving, and she had more energy tonight, Kinda spunky :)
I noticed a now smelling stringy clear discharge coming from her. Not alot, but two strings came out. What is this? Today is day 63 from the FIRST day of breeding.
Boxerowner

Oh cool! Its shouldnt smell but clear discharge is a good sign it should happen anytime now. keep close to her.

07-06-2006, 11:05 PM
Remember what I said in the PM's? That is why it was locked.
Don't know what it is...I let some others know via PM that you are expecting pups hopefully they'll come. :)

I dont know anything about having pups but I hope someone comes on to help you. Red?
Boxerowner
07-06-2006, 11:23 PM
Clear discharge is normal as long as it doesn't smell bad.
The temp thing sometimes is up and down I usually take temp 3 times a day and log it in a book and that way I can see whats normal and whats not.
The temp will usually peek and then drop down below 99 and stay. Thats when you know its time but I have heard that cant always go by temp.

Just checking back in to see how everything's going. Still no pups yet huh?.. hope everything is going well! :)

Nothing is happening yet. Like I said, yesterday day 62 temp droped to 98.6, 12 hours later is was back up and has stayed up. Today is day 63. Puppies are still real active. Her belly is hard. And then the stringy clear mucus today. Two strings came out. She's eating , no nesting, and stays close by me.
Boxerowner
07-06-2006, 11:33 PM
My Girls temp dropped low like that a couple of times so I was thinking that was it but it went back up. Thats why I take temps 3 times instead of just morning and night.
BTW if pups are still active they are fine. You are doing a great job so don't worry. You are prepared for an ER so just keep cool because she can tell your tense and that will make her tense.

She was bred May 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th and tied every time. What do you think? I also counted from the very first day. So May 5th was day 1.

Thats why I wouldn't worry so much just make sure the pups are active and mom is doing as OK as she can. She is really big and if she was bred that many times don't expect just 2.
ChiBree
07-06-2006, 11:46 PM
This is mine and her first time. The ultra sound showed only two. I'm hoping for more! For her sake mostly because though babies will be huge if there are just two. She is big, but the pic makes her look alot bigger, especially cuz she's laying like that.
I just would like to pin point it sence I work full time 5 days a week!

Sorry it got locked. I tried my hardest not to argue and at first my comments were soley on the pups but then I got annoyed. Later I tried to bring it on track again but then it was locked. Sorry that it was partly my fault.
Anyways I know nothing about births but good luck.

Xrays are more reliable when it comes to counting pups.
ChiBree
07-06-2006, 11:56 PM
Well I call my Vet tomorrow and we'll go from there. He may want to see her, not sure yet. If he does I'm going to suggest an xray. I think I'd like to take her in just to be safe. But I've kepted him posted all the way thru from her 1st exam to make sure she was in good health for breeding to her last exam to confirm she was pregnant and her ultra sound. I call them all the time with updates.
I just thought the yesterday was it. Temp dropped = 12 to 24 hours...PUPS. But nope, hasn't happened.
Boxerowner
07-07-2006, 12:00 AM
Well Its prob to late for an Xray.
Nope it has to stay down for it to be time.
Just relax and enjoy the quiet while you have it. lol

Breeding is no wham ,bang ,thank you Mame.,It depends on the breed and the size. I do understand that small breeds have the most problems. I'm glad you're monitoring carefully and are in touch with your vet.Am anxious to hear the outcome.

07-07-2006, 12:54 AM
Hey, chibree. If there is mucus then you are really close. Keep an eye on the mucus though. If it is really fowl smelling or becomes colored (green for example) then get her to the vet.
I would also like to say I am sorry about your thread being locked. I was a big part in it. But like I said it makes me mad when people try to run down newbies because they have questions and need help. And she (summit) was getting on my nerves big time.
But now that is all behind us and we get to wait for PUPPIES!!!! YAY, it is sooooo exciting.
By the way...I say 5 pups----4 boys and 1 girl.
Citrus007
07-07-2006, 12:59 AM
How come everyone favors the guys! Just because she is so big! I like girl dogs better so maybe that is why I favor them but the whole thing is just a guess.

07-07-2006, 08:33 AM
She's fine , acting fine, eating, and no pups no action at all! The mucus yesterday was very stringy and thick and a clear color. I didn't hold it up to smell it but there was no obvious order. I did take it from her and pulled it out and it came out in two stretches of strings. I thought for sure we were on our way.
My Vet opens at 8:30 this morning and I'm calling. Letting him know whats going on and go from there. Is it possible to get an xray this late in the stage?

It depends on the dog and the vet how long they will wait. My vet with smaller dogs likes to take them on the 65th day because of them getting to big. But like I said it depends on your vet

Yes I'm sitting here at work, with guess what on my mind???? It is tourchure being away from her BUT I'm leaving early and gong with her to the Vet.
What I was thinking is if she didn't take on the 1st day like I've been counting, she could still be at day 61, if I count from the last day bred. Right??? Since she was bred May 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th. She had full ties on every day as well.
savethebulliedbreeds
07-07-2006, 11:59 AM
You are very right that it is possible that she never took on the first day. Not sure what to tell you about due date though. Sometimes its hard to guess an exact date with multiple breedings.

I wouldn't rush in to a section just yet but I'm no vet. I have Boxers its very unlikely for a Boxer to need a section with a chi its different they are I have heard notorious for needing a section. I would just make sure that the pups are still moving and mum is feeling OK. The clear discharge is normal and can start at anytime during pregnancy.

Also you were asking about food I would recommend Innova. I think it would be fantastic for a chi.

don't take so many X rays on the dog especially when she is pregnant...x rays have strong radiation..not good for the dog not to mention the pups
sweetbassets
07-07-2006, 01:27 PM
Great!! The discharge is normal, most likely her mucas plug. If it was green and had a very foul oder then that is a bad sign. If she's not already, I would take her to her whelping area. When she starts getting restless, laying down, standing, turning in circles, pawing and digging, thats a good sign one is on the way. Remember if she is pushing and straining for an hour and not producing a pup then you need to rush her to the Vet immediately. Enjoy watching, and try not to help too much, I have heard that if you help too much then it can sometimes cause them to abandon the litter leaving you to raise the pups yourself. Don't hesitate to help if she needs it, or if a pup needs it, but just enjoy watching if she dosen't need your help.
Good Luck!!

I personally don't think that helping with the delivery will cause the mother to abandon the puppies. Just make sure you let her clean them and stuff too. You can't do ALL the work for her.
My chi that needed a section did not want the pups after the surgery and actually growled at them. But she was not in labour before she had her c-section. She was probably wondering where the hell all those pups came from lol. It took her a few hours to get used to the fact that they were hers but everything was fine in the end. If for some reason you do have to get a c-section done and she is not in labour before it, make sure you have mammalac or another milk replacer available just in case she does refuse them.
Just wondering if other people have had any trouble with the bitch rejecting the puppies after being handled to much during delivery? Im wondering cause I am always right in there when my dogs are delivering and I have never had a problem.

07-07-2006, 02:04 PM
I agree it won't always cause that, but Libby's mom was helped too much by the breeder and she wouldn't take care of the pups. On the other hand Libby had to have a c-section and had did not experience giving birth, but she still was the best little mama. I was just saying that I have heard and know know someone who had experienced this by helping too much with the delivery. Not saying this will happen, but there is a more of a chance then if you let her do it herself. Unless she, or the puppies need her help.

Oh I didn't think that. I'm sorry if I sounded offensive, I wasn't trying to.:o :)
Libby's breeder told me about her problems she had with Libby's mom, and my breeding books that I used when learning more about whelping said the samething. I'm sure different dogs different situations. I just wanted to give a little heads up just incase because I know it can happen, but not saying it will.

No, I had 8 pups, one died in a few days following or so, I kept three and gave 4 away. The parents were not health certified or titled wih the UKC, the father had a few wp titles with the adba. However, the moms side had an impressive peidgree in UKC and dad did in ADBA.
It was a planned pregnancy, but unplanned. It was planned for a later time, but happened sooner then expected.
I kept one because she is disabled, and the other two for weight pull. I also have 2 adult APBT and two Pekes at home. Yes, I have a circus, but proud of them.
I would have kept every one of them if we had purchased another home sooner. Mine now is too small, but we are looking as we speak at acreage.
I still keep in contact w/ the pups in their new homes, one is spayed and 3 are showing!
I will never breed again no matter what. It was too hard to part with them, and I still hate the thought of giving them up.

Well the Vets took longer than expected of course. We ist had an ul;tra sound....wait is that two pups??? Yup two pups....wait! Is that her liver or a third???
ChiBree
07-07-2006, 08:55 PM
Wait! It is a pup theres the third heartbeat. Could there be 4??? Lets do an xray. Guess what.......there are 4 !!!!
Also tonight is day 64. (from the 1st day of breeding) NO nesting, strong appitite. Babies going crazy. Also another string of clear stringy ordorless mucus came out when she peed. And no action!!!
If I count from day 1 of the 1st breed its day 64. If I count from the last day she was breed its day 61. She was bred on 4 days in arow. May 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th.
My Vet said he's giving her until Monday morning and if she hasn't had them....then c-section. (out of cuiosity whats the normal price uses have paid for these???)
So I'm glad that there are 4, since she is so LARGE! If there were only two I was getting scared!
Opinions? Advice?

Your almost there, Chi! I remember the excitement of my first litter too, you could of sworn I was the one in labor. C-secs here in my hometown in TX, run almost $500.00. The emergency clinic is almost $700.00. Hopefully, everything will be ok. Sounds like she is still in the first stages, just keep watching her. I had one that never showed any signs, she just got mopey.

For the record, I just read through this whole thread *smiles* An acquaitance of mine had 7 babies from her chi bitch *choke* she was slightly oversized to. Her chi was a pet store pup and a BYB breeding to a male chi pup also bought from the pet store as well. I think they weighed close to 8 - 10 lbs ( mom and dad that is ). I hope your girl is okay and the babies. If you have to do a C-section will they spay her to at the same time for you to save some money? Or are you planning on breeding her again? Good luck to you, I hope they come soon!

The stringy slimy stuff is her mucus plug. It can come out very slowly for a few days. It doesnt just pop out like the cork in a wine bottle lol. :p Not saying that that is what you thought. Try not to worry so much. I know its hard not too but.... Congrats on the 4 pups, I was close when I said 5....I still think there is one little sneaker hiding in there:D ...even though thats pretty hard to do in an xray.

He said that there was really no way to actually say YES she's will deffinatly have trouble delivering. He said the pups were a "little big" but he wants nature to take its course. He seen no reason to intervene at this point. I've already called and let them know her temp dropped in case I have to page in an emergency.

I've read and have also watched two welping videos where it says and shows the first pup taking the longest to come out. My vet said no longer than 10 minutes, and he wants me to call. (no longer than 10 minutes with the pup crowning) I watched an actual birth recorded on video and that first pup took much longer than 10 minutes.
I'm just curious as to what I need to expect and when to know there is a problem. Especially if there is that chance that they are too big. Can anyone help?

With this being your first litter I would say 10 min and take off to the vet if not coming. I have had to assist a bitch in her first whelp with a pup and pull gently but after the first they come fast.
savethebulliedbreeds
07-08-2006, 12:43 PM
Don't expect the first one to come really quick. But once he has crowned then it shouldnt take long at all. I agree with the vet if it takes longer than 10 minutes once the puppies has crowned then there is a problem.

Yeah, that is crazy. I whelp peoples litters for them all the time. Even if they didn't use one of my studs. I do it for free. But thats just me. You can do it yourself. You know what you are doing (even though you think you don't) and your vet is only a phone call away.
ChiBree
07-08-2006, 12:56 PM
Shes getting pick of the litter.
But she said she's very experienced and knows how to avoid a c-section. If a pup is turned she knows how to go in and turn the pup and make it come out. She feels that all Vets just go ahead and do a section without trying other avenues. She feels if I call my vet he will just be lazy, be only worried about getting there, getting it done and going back home to bed and collecting the money. I told my vet what she had said I think he thinks I was second guesing him (which I wasn't) and I may have ticked him off. But I was only looking for his advice on what she had said.
Does this sound right? (the going inside of the female)
I decided I was doing it myself.

ChiBree, puppies cannot control their body temperature for the first 7 days or so of life.
They should be slightly elevated up off the floor, and yes, you should have a warming area available for them.
I use a heat lamp, but many people use a heating pad as well. Just make sure it is well covered and not TOO hot. You should leave a thermometer on top of the pad so you can see it. It should not be hotter than about 100 degrees.
ChiBree
07-08-2006, 06:00 PM
Ok thanks Red. I bought a heat lamp and my husband freaked! Only because an irresponsible friend of his used one for his dogs in his barn and the pups knocked it over and burned the barn down. (no pups were injured) So I returned it and decided to use the heating pad. I just didn't know if I needed it with it being so warm. I'll grab one of our thermometers and put it in with them. I'll cover the pad with a towel and keep it on low.

Saturday 9:50pm Update:
She has slepted all day, not acting herself at all. Even when grandma and grandpa came over she didn't get out of my bed, they had to go in my room to see her. Got her up an hour ago and took her potty. More clear stretchy gooy stuff. Then she wanted right back in my bed. She showed first signs of nesting I think. Scratched a little in the blanket and pulled it with her teeth then layed down. She's been by herself all evening now. She never lays around like this.
PS - NO i'm not letting her have them in my bed!

Hmm.. Not quite, I'm sure she'd rather have a thermometer stuck up her ars than four puppies sucking her teats off! LOL

No new action. She is just wanting to lay in my bed! She's NEVER been this way. We just went potty again and there was more of the clear discharge. When will this happen? She's barely nesting.Tomorrow mrning will be 24 hours!
While waiting...here some of my babies.

I didn't realize you had 8 dogs. How come so many? Do you rescue. I have four rescues myself.
I forget, who's the dad of your pups? Do you have pics? Did you post them before? I forget

What ever:rolleyes: You don't need to be rude and take it off topic. You seem to be the drill Sgt around here and it gets old fast. If you don't like it don't read it or post in it.

Wow you guys don't quit eh?
I have 50 dogs running wild in my house, unregistard, unvacinated, un spayed, un neutered, knocking boots with anything they see.

Come on we don't want to make ChiBree's thread locked again, that wouldn't be fair. Besides this way whoever continues it will be at blame but you will be at no fault.
I love your dogs. I have to admit I favor your basset and yorkie, though that is just because I thought those pictures were so adorable. Not to say the others weren't.
I'm so excited. Its time for puppies! Sorry I have no advice to offer I just get caught up in the exceitement.

Yet another perfectly reasonable question left unanswered. Beginning to wonder and worry more for the dogs.

You know what summit. I am seriously sick of you ragging on her. You have no reason to be in this thread other than to attack her. Screw off and leave her alone. If you wanna b!tch lets start a new thread and talk about how I have 7 dogs and 6 are not spayed or neutered. I will start if for you just so you will leave her alone. And now I am done with you in this thread because I don't want it locked on her again.

I'm pretty concerned as to why my personal business is ANYONES business. Apparently I thought this thread was about learning and asking EXPERIENCE breeders (which I AM NOT) for guidence and suggestions.
I bred my Zoey because I WANT TO. Hows that?
And if anyone else there wants to know? ALL my dogs are neutered. Zoey is not. I take in shelter dogs , as well as foster.
Would you now like my yearly salary, bra size, and eye color before I can get some frickin serious answers???
I think I've wasted my time.
